IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

At the present time, shop owners and marketing companies use advertisement to outreach their customer about their new products in order to sell more goods and also to stay competitive in this modern clutterd market. Therefore, some individuals think that advertisments cmapaigns are the most victorious method to purchase products. While, other group believes that advertisments are too prevalent and people dont pay enough attention to it. This essay will discuss both side arguments along with my opinion, before reaching to any logical conclusion.

On the one hand, in the modern market, there are diverse range of products available to purchase, and users usually get confused about product's quality and the trust. Therefore, advertisments help people to compare the prices of different brands' products and make comparison of each item's relevent points. For instance, with advertising consumers can check particular brands Vaccum cleaner features with other without purchasing it.

On the other hand, advertisments has now days become very common and alsmots all social media and entertainments apps or websites use advertisments for their revenue. However, due to this practises people have learned to ignore these kind of ads or even physical billboards because their no longer rare in this modern society and too much information overload may confuse consumers. For instance, according to google's survery around 40% of people skip ads without clicking on link.

As my perspective, till advertisments are the most relible way for business and new companies to promot their products and its reletively cheap and fast comapred to physical selling. To give an example, people can promot their new product via newspaper or social media app to outreach to entier world in one click. Consequently, ads are currntly grater source of staying competitve in this market.

To sum up, some individuals thinks advertisments are great becuase due to its nature consumers can comapre the usebility and price of diverse products easily. Whereas, some think that advertisments are nearly dead due to clutterd and common market.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a position: the first body paragraph explains how advertising helps consumers compare products, while the second argues that its prevalence encourages people to ignore it. The examples about comparing vacuum-cleaner features and skipping online ads make the discussion relevant. However, the opinion is not fully consistent or clearly developed. The final opinion paragraph mainly explains why advertising is useful for businesses, rather than directly weighing whether it still persuades consumers to buy. The conclusion also repeats the two views without clearly restating your own judgement. Develop the central comparison further—for example, explain when advertising can influence purchasing and when consumers tune it out—and state your position explicitly throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, a paragraph presenting your perspective, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To sum up” helps readers follow the discussion, and ideas generally progress in a logical order. This already provides a coherent framework, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. “While, other group believes” does not form a complete contrast smoothly, and “As my perspective” is an awkward transition into your opinion. The conclusion’s “Whereas” also leaves the contrast unfinished. Use linking phrases that express the precise relationship between ideas, and make the final paragraph synthesize rather than simply repeat the earlier points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “competitive,” “prevalent,” “revenue,” “information overload,” and “consumers,” which helps convey the main ideas. There are also some useful phrases such as “compare the prices” and “stay competitive.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “outreach their customer,” “most victorious method,” and “advertisments” are examples. Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “ads are nearly dead,” which does not clearly describe people ignoring advertisements. Aim for accurate, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. A smaller set of well-controlled terms—such as “reach potential customers,” “influence purchasing decisions,” and “advertising saturation”—would make the argument clearer and more precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “while,” and “in order to.” Most of the argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur in agreement, articles, sentence construction, and punctuation. For example, “advertisments has” should use a plural verb, while “there are diverse range” needs an article. “While, other group believes” is an incomplete or poorly joined construction, and “because their no longer rare” has an unclear subject and verb form. Commas also interrupt some sentence openings unnecessarily. Review subject–verb agreement and article use, and check that each contrast clause is attached to a complete sentence. More accurate control of these patterns would make your varied sentence structures easier to read.
