IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that advertising is highly successful at convincing us to buy stuff but others believe that advertising is a thing of less attention now than before. I'm in favor of first opinion, advertisement still plays a significant role in convincing us to buy stuff.

The proponents of advertisement being successful in coaxing people to buy things argue that people still purchase things which the are seeing in adds over and over again. Moreover, it is also a human phsycology that when you see same thing over and over again your brain also develope a signle that you might need that stuff. When this feeling gets stronger and stronger you eventually purchase that thing. I also think that this is one of the reasons big companies and brands spend a significant budget on their adds. They usually publish their adds on commonly use social media platforms such as instagram, youtube, google and tiktok. Now the thing id how does those add convince anyone to buy anything?

All these platforms are integerated in some sense. For instance, if you search about anything on google generally. You will notice that within no time you will start seeing the adds about the stuff you just searched. Although even if you ignore those adds hey'll eventually pop up on your feed over and over again which will give you a sense of feeling that you should buy that thing. This makes the purpose of those adds complete.

Conversely, there are those people who believe that advertisements have become so common that people no longer pay attention to them. They argue that advertisments no longer impacts anyone or convince them to make a purchase. I strongly disagree with that statement because now a days anyone who starts a new busisness invests a considerable amount of money to advertise his busisness. It is mainly because they know that it will help them boost their sales. People do pay attention to adds they find interesting. Because everyone is looking for something to buy whether it's a property, any home essential or a vehicle. So, whenever the come across an add matching their interest they do pay their attention to that.

To conclude, I would mention that advertising has not become the thing of past yet and a significant number of people still pays attention to them. They also buy stuff they see on adds.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address both views and state your position clearly: you support the view that advertising still persuades people. The discussion is relevant, and the examples of repeated exposure and targeted adverts on Google and social media help explain your reasoning. This meets the task well, while showing some of the development expected at a stronger level. However, the opposing view is mostly reported rather than explored: you say people may ignore adverts because they are common, but do not explain when or why this happens. Some claims, such as “everyone is looking for something to buy,” are broad and would benefit from qualification or evidence. Develop the counterargument more fully and make the comparison between the two views more explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs presenting the persuasive effect of advertising and the opposing view, and a conclusion. The progression from repeated exposure to targeted adverts is understandable, and signposts such as “Moreover,” “For instance,” and “Conversely” help guide the reader. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or unclear. The question “Now the thing is how does those add convince anyone to buy anything?” interrupts the formal discussion, and “This makes the purpose of those adds complete” does not clearly identify the purpose. Some ideas also repeat the point that people pay attention to adverts. Use more precise referencing and connect each example directly to the claim it supports to make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of relevant vocabulary, including “persuading,” “significant role,” “proponents,” “considerable amount,” and “boost their sales.” These choices allow you to discuss advertising and consumer behaviour, and the meaning is generally clear. However, the range is not consistently controlled: informal or repetitive expressions such as “buy stuff” and “thing” reduce the academic tone, while “a sense of feeling” is redundant and “the purpose … complete” is an unnatural collocation. Spelling errors such as “advertisments,” “busisness,” and “phsycology” are noticeable. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling carefully; vary repeated words such as “ads” and “buy” with suitable alternatives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional and subordinate structures, as in “when you see same thing over and over again” and “Although even if you ignore those adds…”. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. Examples include “people still purchase things which the are seeing,” “your brain also develope,” and “advertisements have become so common that people no longer pay attention to them” followed by the incorrect agreement in “advertisments no longer impacts.” There are also problems with articles, plurals, and question structure, as in “how does those add convince anyone.” Review subject–verb agreement, article use, and sentence boundaries, and simplify constructions when several clauses make accuracy difficult.
