IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The advertisement of products online for selling is too common today which causes some people to think that the people are no longer paying attention to the advertisements while critics argue that advertisements are the most successful methods for companies to attract new customers from my perspective, i partially agree with both views because advertisements can attract new buyers but frequently watching the same products at screen make people feel distracted.
The reasons for people to get tired from watching ads is because they are more common now as compare with the past. Many companies are regularly advertising their products online for racing to attract new buyers, and the same ads popups at tv and mobile screen causes distraction to viewers. Additionally some companies are advertising their products without meeting the demands of consumers. To exemplify that if one customers wants to buy a new book, if he are seeing advertisements about newly launched phone at tv he may feel uninterested to buy the product. So targeting the interest of customers is so important.
In contrast the people who support ideas of advertising products to attract customers have also highlights the valid reasons. They argue no matter how better quality of your products are, it somehow requires to be seen by consumers. Many online platforms like Facebook, Instagram regularly checks their users data and advertise products only according to their needs.
The balance approach companies should need to take while advertising their products. Advertisement might be helpful to attract new customers However the right audience matters the most. For targeting the right audience, Companies use advance platforms and tools instead of only relying on tv base advertisements.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a position: advertising can attract buyers, but repeated or poorly targeted ads can distract people. The discussion of ad saturation is supported by the example of someone wanting a book but seeing a phone advertisement, and the point about platforms using user data explains how advertising can reach potential customers. However, the example is confusing because it does not clearly show how an irrelevant ad affects a purchase, and the view that advertising persuades people to buy is less fully developed than the view about targeting. Your conclusion restates a balanced position, but could explain more directly when advertising is effective and when it is ignored. Develop each side with clearer cause-and-effect reasoning and a more precise example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph on ad fatigue, a contrasting paragraph on advertising’s effectiveness, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “Additionally,” “In contrast,” and “The balance approach” help signal the direction of the discussion, and the main ideas are generally easy to follow. This already shows purposeful organisation, but some links are mechanical or unclear. For example, the book-and-phone example repeats “if” and does not make the connection to the preceding point smoothly; the final paragraph also begins with a fragment-like statement rather than a complete transition. Use clearer topic sentences and connect examples explicitly to the claim they support. More precise referencing would also help readers follow who “they” refers to in the discussion of companies and platforms.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “attract new customers,” “consumers,” “targeting,” and “advertisements,” and you attempt some less common expressions such as “valid reasons” and “balance approach.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “racing to attract new buyers,” “ads popups,” “at tv and mobile screen,” and “tv base advertisements” are difficult or awkward formulations. There is also repetition of “advertising,” “products,” and “customers,” so the range can feel narrow. Aim for natural collocations and vary repeated terms—for example, use “competing to attract buyers,” “pop-up ads,” and “television-based advertising.” Check word forms and spelling as well as meaning when revising.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a concession in “advertisements can attract new buyers but…” and a conditional example beginning “if one customers wants…”. These attempts show some range, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, some errors in sentence structure, agreement, articles, and punctuation reduce accuracy. For instance, “the people are no longer paying” is an awkwardly formed clause in the opening, while “if he are seeing” has incorrect subject–verb agreement; “one customers” also mismatches singular and plural. Several long sentences run together without clear punctuation, especially the introduction and the book example. Practise building shorter, controlled sentences first, then combine ideas with accurate subordinate clauses and consistent punctuation.
