IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Some individuals argue that advertisement is very good at influencing people to purchase items. Other group deem that advertising does not get too much attention by us because it is very common. I agree with the formar statement however, I will discuss both view and will give my own opinion.

Advertisement plays very important part in the sale of every product nowadays. A good promotional add can attract customers and make you to think twice before ignoring a product. Companies use well known celebrites and litimited time discount market stratagies to adversite their prodcuts. For example, nike show sales were very limited before michel jordan starts advertising for them and the sales boosted roughly 500% after that big celebrity starts to wear nike shoes thus, it plays vital role in attracting customers.

On the other hand, for some people advertisement is largly common because it is widespread over intenet or on billboards. When individuals goes outside there home they sees templates over the poles or big billboard screens in the center of the city and ignore that like an ordinary. For example, many people skips youtube adds when they are watching videos even they like to pay for the permium to remove the adds, resulting the ignorance of the adds.

In conclusion, even though some people igores the promotional advertisment but it is still ralevent to influence customers to buy things. Advertisments are largly proven to lean the customers towards a good advertising product and to boost sales at very high rate.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear position: “I agree with the former statement.” The body paragraphs remain relevant, with the first explaining how celebrity endorsements and discounts can influence purchases, and the second describing how people ignore online and outdoor advertising. The Nike example gives the first view some support, while the YouTube example illustrates the opposing view. However, the discussion is uneven: the first argument is more developed, whereas the second mainly describes exposure and skipping adverts without explaining when or why advertising may lose its influence. The conclusion repeats your position but adds little synthesis. To strengthen the response, explain each view more fully and make the examples precise and clearly connected to your claims.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. “On the other hand” signals the change in perspective effectively, and examples are placed within the relevant paragraphs. However, some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, the move from celebrity endorsements to the Nike sales claim would benefit from a clearer explanation of the relationship. The long sentence beginning “For example, nike show sales…” also contains several ideas that are difficult to follow together. In the second paragraph, the shift from outdoor advertising to YouTube is understandable but abrupt. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more explicit links between claims and examples to improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of advertising vocabulary, including “influencing,” “limited time discount,” “billboard,” “customers,” and “boost sales.” These choices help communicate the topic, and you attempt some less common expressions. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “adversite,” “celebrites,” “stratagies,” and “ralevent” are examples. Some collocations are also unnatural, such as “promotional add” and “lean the customers towards.” Aim for accurate spelling and more natural combinations, such as “advertisement,” “celebrity endorsement,” and “persuade consumers to buy.” This would make your vocabulary more precise while retaining the relevant range already shown.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrastive opening and clauses introduced by “because” and “even though.” The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors in agreement, articles, verb forms, and sentence construction occur in several places. For example, “individuals goes” and “they sees” do not agree in number, while “make you to think” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence about Nike combines multiple clauses without clear punctuation, which makes its structure difficult to follow. There are also missing or incorrect articles, as in “plays very important part.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries, while keeping some of your longer structures.
