IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In today's era, with the increase in technological developments the communication is also digitalised smartly. There are plenty of devices through which one gets to connect with other persons or with the public in general and can give their own opinions. Like with advertisement, there are many means through which advertisements reaches to the public.
There are views of some people who say advertisements are extremely successful at persuading people to buy things while others say that it is so common that people do rarely pay attention to it. I agree with both the view points. Nowadays, the advertising agencies do a great research and get the colorful ways to persuad people to buy things. Further, the offers and discounts they advertise makes a huge impact on people to purchase the things. The festival offers and customisation options they provide to get the attention of the customers.Through advertisements people do get inspire and become ready to purchase the things.
There are also views of some people who believe that advertisements are so common that people do not give much attention to it and do not make their purchasing decisions based on it. The people who believes in this idea do not get influc by it. May be their mentality is like this or they are like more rational to take their own decision of buying the things. The people with this mindset also spends their money wisely and with mindfulness. Also the newness in the idea of advertisement is missing so people do not care with what products or things are being advertised and do not pay attention to it.
Overall, to some extent i agree with both the view points as i think people do pay attention to advertisements with their choice of spending or buying the things not specifically to every advertisement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both required views and give a position, stating, “I agree with both the view points.” The first side is supported with relevant examples such as discounts, festival offers and customisation encouraging purchases. You also explain why some people may ignore advertising, referring to rational decision-making and mindful spending. However, the discussion remains general, and the second view is less clearly developed: the claim that advertising is common and lacks novelty is not illustrated with a specific example. Your final position—that people respond selectively rather than to every advertisement—is useful, but it could be stated more precisely and supported by explaining what influences that choice. Develop each side with clearer reasoning and make your own conclusion more decisive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a concluding statement. This makes the discussion easy to follow at a broad level. You also use signposts such as “while others,” “Further,” and “Overall” to show relationships between ideas. However, some linking is mechanical or unclear, and ideas within paragraphs do not always progress smoothly. For example, “The festival offers and customisation options they provide to get the attention of the customers” is an incomplete sentence, interrupting the first argument. The opening paragraph about digital communication also does not lead directly into the debate. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to its point, and ensure each paragraph develops one coherent line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “persuading,” “discounts,” “customisation,” “purchasing decisions,” and “mindfulness.” These choices show an attempt to discuss advertising and consumer behaviour beyond very basic terms. However, the range is limited by repeated wording such as “people,” “things,” “advertisements,” and “pay attention,” while several expressions are inaccurate or unnatural, including “get the colorful ways,” “get inspire,” and “do not get influc by it.” Spelling and word-form errors also affect clarity. Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms—for instance, refer to “consumers” or “potential buyers,” and describe campaigns as “designed to attract attention.” Proofread carefully so that vocabulary choices communicate your intended meaning reliably.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “while,” “through which,” and “so.” The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but errors are frequent enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent: “advertisements reaches” and “the offers and discounts … makes” should use plural verbs. There are also faulty sentence structures, such as “The festival offers and customisation options they provide to get the attention of the customers,” which lacks a complete main clause. Other examples include “The people who believes” and “people do get inspire.” Improve control of agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence boundaries, and check that every sentence contains a complete clause. More accurate complex sentences will make your reasoning clearer.
