IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Whether advertisements can still persuade consumers to buy things or consumers no longer pay attention to it remains a contentious issue. In this essay, I will discuss both viewpoints and further explain why I believe advertising is still very effective and can convince customers to buy things.
Proponents contend that businesses invest a large sum of money in marketing and they have being successful consistently in convincing customers to buy their products. To substantiate, companies make their logos and trademark in such a manner that it catches consumer's attention. Moreover, companies market their product through very specific channels and create strong associate for their brands. For instance, Nike market it products in every sporting events. People are so used to see Nike logo that whenever a person wants to buy a running shoe or any sportswear, they automatically think of Nike Nike automatically comes to their mind.
On the other hand, some people argue that the majority of businesses have realise the importance of advertising and therefore, every business whether big or small spend money on marketing their products. As a result, people are constantly exposed to some advertisement and they naturally tend to overlook and pay very little attention to it. While this is true, companies have noticed this change in behaviour of consumers. Businesses now create adverts that are shorter since, people ability to pay attention have reduce. Moreover, some businesses pay a significant amount of money to display their products in every possible areas. For instance, a business now pays to market their product on social media, television, billboards, newspaper to catch people's attention. Even though consumers may not pay attention to the advert but they tend to remeber the product. Therefore, whenever they need to buy an item, they will purchase the product that was constantly exposed to them.
In conclusion, although people pay less attention to advertisements than before, I strongly believe that creating strong brand association and constantly showcasing advertisement to customers, advertising can still be successful at persuading consumers to buy things.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response addresses both views and gives a clear, consistent opinion that advertising remains persuasive. The first body paragraph explains how logos and repeated brand exposure can influence purchasing, while the second recognises that consumers may overlook the volume of advertising and explains how businesses respond. The Nike example supports the first view, and the discussion of repeated exposure supports your position. This fits the task well, though some claims are broad: for example, the assertion that consumers will buy a product simply because they have repeatedly seen it would be stronger with a more specific explanation or example. Develop the contrast between ignoring individual adverts and still being influenced by brand familiarity more explicitly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay has a clear four-part structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion that restates your position. The progression is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the other hand,” “While this is true,” and “In conclusion” help show how the argument develops. Some linking is less controlled: “Moreover” introduces additional points repeatedly, and the transition from consumers overlooking adverts to businesses making them shorter could be explained more smoothly. The Nike example also contains a repeated idea (“they automatically think of Nike” and “Nike automatically comes to their mind”), which interrupts the flow. More varied, precise referencing and tighter links between claims and examples would make the organisation more fluent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “marketing,” “brand association,” “exposed,” and “persuading consumers,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “specific channels” and “display their products.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “create strong associate” does not express the intended idea naturally, and “market their product in every sporting events” is awkward. “Advertisement” and “product” recur frequently, limiting flexibility. Spelling slips such as “remeber” also reduce accuracy. Aim to learn common collocations for branding and consumer behaviour, and vary repeated terms with suitable alternatives while checking word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including contrast clauses (“While this is true”) and a concession in the conclusion (“although people pay less attention…”). The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. Examples include “they have being successful” instead of “they have been successful,” “companies have realise” instead of “have realised,” and “people ability to pay attention have reduce,” where possessive and verb forms are not controlled. There are also agreement and sentence-boundary problems, such as “Nike market it products” and the run-on sentence around “Nike automatically comes to their mind.” Improve accuracy in subject–verb agreement, verb forms, possessives, and punctuation, then proofread complex sentences carefully.
