IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Many individuals have different points of view on whether advertisement is good for compelling public to buy things or it is so common nowadays that no one takes interest in. My personal opinion is in the favour of marketing and publicizing items.
Promotions are a crucial factor in expanding one's bussiness. A huge amount of budget is specified for the publicity just to make sure that citizens get to know about the new launching product. If we do not do product promotion, how will people get to know about our commodity. Consequently, marketing campaigns play a crucial role in the success of startups and established businesses.
On the other hand, a group of individuals oppose this mindset. They think that product promotions have become so ordinary that public has started to pay little to no attention. One of the main reason for this could be the increase in the amount of fradulent activities in the society. They do not know what to believe and what not, so they just simply ignore it. Secondly, large businesses had made a strong position already that people trusts them only. So, if new products come in market, it takes alot of time to gain people attention and trust.
In my opinion, promotional campaigns plays a vital role in forcing people buy different things and there is no debate about it. Nevertheless, we cannot deny the fact that because of the different business frauds people do not trust easily. So, if citizens come up with the new item or get to see upcoming launch they do not just believe it instantly and go for buying it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and give a personal position, so the response is relevant to the task. The first body paragraph explains that promotion informs people about new products and supports business success; the next presents reasons some people ignore advertising, including fraud and established brands’ advantage. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The claim that campaigns are “forcing people” to buy is not clearly explained or supported, and the final paragraph largely repeats the two sides rather than resolving them with a precise opinion. Clarify whether advertising is generally persuasive despite widespread exposure, and support each view with a specific example or a fuller explanation of how it affects consumers.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the other hand,” “Secondly,” and “Nevertheless” help signal changes in direction. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes mechanical, and the conclusion repeats earlier points rather than bringing them together. Some links between claims are also unclear: the discussion moves from fraud to people trusting established businesses without fully explaining how these points connect. Improve cohesion by making each paragraph develop one central idea in a clear sequence, and use referencing and linking phrases more precisely instead of relying mainly on basic signposts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “publicity,” “marketing campaigns,” “fraudulent activities,” and “upcoming launch.” This is enough to communicate the main ideas, but several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which makes some sentences less natural. For example, “compelling public to buy things” and “forcing people buy” are awkward ways to describe advertising’s influence, while “new launching product” is unclear. There are also spelling errors such as “bussiness,” “fradulent,” and “alot.” Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully; varying repeated terms such as “promotions” and “people” would also make the writing more flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional and subordinate structures such as “If we do not do product promotion, how will people get to know…” and “because of the different business frauds people do not trust easily.” However, errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences awkward or difficult to follow. Examples include “One of the main reason,” “public has started,” “people trusts them,” and “campaigns plays,” where agreement or article use is incorrect. The phrase “forcing people buy” also needs a grammatical pattern such as “forcing people to buy.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb patterns, then proofread each sentence for a complete and natural structure.
