IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Some people think that commercials are incredibly successful at convincing us to purchase things. Other thinks that we no longer pay attention to it because commercials become so common. I will discuss both the views.
Examining the fisrt view, the thinking of some people that advertising is extremely successful at persuading people to buy thinds is right because the commercials are made astheticaly so good now-a-days that people can not resist watching it in this way the people get interested and automaticaly they buy things. For example, my best friend started a small business of some hair accessories and other accessories for girls, when she started her business she posted some adds about her things and gradually her follower started increasing and lot of people noe buy things from her.
The other view is that, some other people think that they do not pay attention to the advertising because it became so common which i think this believe is commom because some of the people are not interested in adds because add are sometime irritating. Furthermore, some time advertising just keep coming again and again until the person just get irritated. For instance, i mostly use instagram and whenever i am scrolling the advertising reel just keep coming. Moreover, i have watched one add a thousand times so in this way i do not pay attention to it any more.
To conclude, I have discussed both the views. in my opinion it depends person to person that anyone is interested or not.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You address both views and give a personal opinion, so the response is relevant to the question. The first view is supported with your friend’s online business, while the second is illustrated by repeated Instagram adverts. However, the discussion remains limited: the examples are mostly personal, and the conclusion that it “depends person to person” does not clearly explain your own position or why. Develop each view with a broader explanation and state a more definite opinion. The response is 244 words, six words below the 250-word minimum; the eight words copied from the task prompt are not counted. This shortfall, together with the under-developed ideas, limits how fully the task is addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. This helps the reader follow the main discussion, and examples are placed with the relevant viewpoint. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and linking phrases can feel mechanical or repetitive. For example, “Furthermore,” “Moreover,” and “For instance” are used, but the ideas around them are not always connected smoothly. The conclusion mainly repeats that both views were discussed rather than drawing the argument together. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to its point, and make the final paragraph summarise your reasoning and position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “persuading,” “advertising,” “irritating,” and “interested.” However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “people,” “advertising,” “things,” and “add.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as “astheticaly,” “follower,” and “commercials become so common,” which make parts of the response less clear or natural. Aim for more precise expressions and check spelling carefully. For example, distinguish between an advertisement and an advert, and use suitable collocations such as “attract potential customers” or “become desensitised to repeated adverts.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including explanations with “because” and examples introduced by “when.” However, the range is limited, and complex sentences often contain errors that make the reader pause. Examples include “Other thinks” instead of “Other people think,” “her follower started increasing,” and “some time advertising just keep coming,” where agreement and verb forms are not controlled. Sentence boundaries and punctuation also need attention: the first body paragraph contains several ideas joined without clear punctuation. Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea and a supporting clause, and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb forms before submitting.
