IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In the modern era, the debate over whether advertising successfull or a thing of no significance has sparked widespread discussion. While some individuals argue that it successfully convinced us to purchase goods, others believe that advertising has no much significance to pay attention on it, In my opinion, both perspectives have merit for people on the basis of their on interest. This essay will examine the both sides before presenting a reasoned conclusion.

On the one hand, there are compelling reason why some individuals support weightiness of advertising. The primary argument in favor of this is that Ads inform consumers about new launched product in market which often leads to raised product awareness. For instance, a company launches a new makeup product and promotes it on TV, so female learned about it and later buy it. Furthermore, supporters of this view maintain that without this approach, society would struggle to increase sales, making it a neccessary step for stimulating economic growth.

On the othr hand, an alternative perspective suggest that individuals dont pay much attention on Ads is equally, if not more, essential. Proponents of this side argue that clever ads pushes people to buy things that they dont need, which ultimately fosters excessive consumerism. For example, A girl sees an ad of contact lens may beg their parent to buy for her without knowing that its harms her eyes in a young age. While there is a distinct value in the former argument, I personally agree with latter viewpoint because it target young children to raise their product sales.

To sum up, while valid arguments surround both views, I retierate that advertising mislead vulnerable consumers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views: advertising can raise awareness of new products, while it can encourage unnecessary purchases, particularly among children. Your position is clearest in the second body paragraph, where you say you agree with the latter view, and the conclusion repeats that advertising can mislead vulnerable consumers. However, the opening says both perspectives have merit “for people on the basis of their on interest,” which makes your own position difficult to identify. The supporting ideas are relevant but not fully developed: the makeup example is brief, and the contact-lens example needs a clearer explanation of how advertising persuades children and why this is harmful. State your position consistently and extend each example with a direct link to the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” make the contrast easy to follow, and the examples are placed alongside the relevant arguments. This coherent arrangement meets the core expectations, while some features of stronger progression are present. However, links between ideas can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear: “the latter viewpoint” requires the reader to infer which view you mean, while “the former argument” is not a precise reference. The introduction also announces a “reasoned conclusion,” but the final paragraph is very brief. Use clearer references and develop the conclusion so it follows more fully from the discussion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “product awareness,” “stimulating economic growth,” “excessive consumerism,” and “vulnerable consumers.” These choices show an effort to discuss the issue beyond basic terms. However, the range is limited by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, word form, and spelling. Phrases such as “support weightiness of advertising,” “no much significance,” and “pay attention on Ads” are unnatural and can make the intended meaning harder to follow. There are also spelling errors such as “successfull,” “neccessary,” and “retierate.” Prefer familiar, accurate collocations over ambitious but unsuitable phrasing, and proofread spelling and capitalization. For example, “importance of advertising” is clearer than “weightiness of advertising.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple statements and attempts at complex sentences, including “While some individuals argue…” and “because it target young children…”. This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, complex constructions are often faulty, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries sometimes make the reader work to interpret the meaning. Examples include “advertising successfull,” “a company launches … so female learned,” “clever ads pushes,” and “it target young children.” The opening also runs two sentences together after “discussion,” and the final paragraph begins with a comma splice-like structure. Check subject–verb agreement and tense consistency, and use full stops to separate complete sentences.
