IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, there has been an argument that certain people believe that advertising is extemely successful at attracting them to buy things, while other individuals says we don't pay heed to it because it is so common nowadays.
The major reason behind the attraction of people on advertisement is that it uses popular celebrities to advertise their products such as film stars, sport players etc. For example, Nike ask cristiano ronaldo, a football player, to advertise their shoes. Nowadays, many people watch movies, series and shows. As a result, they also wanted to buy clothes, shoes and scents that the celebrities use. So, the advertisement companies trigger their emotions by casting famous actors to promote their products. Moreover, those celebrities confirm that the product is of good quality and reliable for people. Therefore, it helps individuals to buy good quality things without getting scammed.
However, in modern era, advertising has become a common thing because a huge number of companies are advertising their products. For instance, in Pakistan, almost 1000 brand companies are promoting their product by advertisement. So, whenever people sees ads and postures they find it useless because they thought that they have seen it earlier. In addittion, another reason behind negligence of people is that they thought online purchasing is just fraud because some people make fake accounts and ads.
In conclusion, I would say that the benefits of advertisement outweigh its drawbacks because it will keep people updated the trend and allow them to copy their favourite actors and actresses.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views: the first body paragraph explains how celebrity endorsements can persuade buyers, while the second argues that repeated advertising can be ignored and that online ads may seem fraudulent. Your conclusion also gives a position, saying advertising’s benefits outweigh its drawbacks. These points are relevant, but some are less fully developed than others. The celebrity example is specific, yet the claim that endorsements help people buy “good quality things without getting scammed” is asserted rather than explained, and the second view could distinguish more clearly between ad saturation and distrust of online purchasing. The conclusion focuses on copying celebrities and following trends, so it does not fully resolve the contrast between the two views. Develop and connect these ideas more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “For example,” “As a result,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the main progression, and the two body paragraphs each have a recognisable focus. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through paragraphing and signposting. However, connections can feel mechanical, particularly the repeated cause-and-effect transitions in the first body paragraph. Some references are also unclear: “they” in “they find it useless” could refer to people or companies, and “it” in the conclusion is not precisely defined. Use transitions more selectively and make pronoun references explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to discuss advertising, including “celebrities,” “promote,” “reliable,” and “fake accounts.” There are also attempts at less common phrasing, such as “trigger their emotions,” though the expression is not fully natural in this context. Overall, the meaning is generally understandable, but noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling errors limit precision: “attraction of people on advertisement,” “postures” for “posters,” and “keep people updated the trend” are examples. Some wording is also repetitive, especially “advertisement” and “people.” Build a more accurate range of collocations and check spelling; for example, describe ads as “saturated” or “ubiquitous” and say that they “keep consumers informed about trends.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple sentences and longer structures, including a relative clause in “a football player” and a conditional-style explanation beginning “because it is so common.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the paragraph structure gives you opportunities to express cause and contrast. However, some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction reduce accuracy. For example, “other individuals says” should use a plural verb, “Nike ask” needs a singular verb, and “whenever people sees” has incorrect subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “The major reason behind the attraction…” is also awkwardly constructed. Practise checking each subject against its verb and revise longer sentences for clear, complete grammatical patterns.
