IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's rapidly changing world, advertisements play a major role in endorsement of a product in the market has become increasingly common, bringing significant changes to the way people buy product these days has became a matter of considerable debate. While some people believe that advertisements are being successful in promoting things which usually attracts people to buy things. Others argue that traditional advertisement have no influence on people to buy products.

On the one hand, companies usually relay on advertisementing when endorsing new products because already the market is filled with lot of competitors with similar products. Additionally, some big companies hire a celebrity in order to advertise their products on many different social media platforms, which usually audience assuming that celebrities use such products in their daily life. Which is one of the reasons new products usually grabs people's attention. Consequently, many new products reaches specific audience and their sales are increased significantly over the period. For instance, recently actor Vijay devarakonda, launched a new product into the market, which is based on skincare essentials, eventhough there are many such products launched long before into the market. Hence, it is a strategy of the company to make their products special from other products through such advertisements.

On the other hand, one of the main reason why advertisment no longer have influence on people is because we can find advertisements almost everywhere. This is because, the advertisment companies are paid to advertise products. As a result we can see alot of advertisements on roads, foot pavements, buildings, railway stations and even in airports its has been common now a days to see such advertisments. Another reason is e-advertisements which usually intrrupts the users experience by popping out in the middle of the page, which makes it annoying. Therefore, it may loose people's interest.

In conclusion, although we can see many advertisements. I believe that it depends upon the quality of the product which gains the interest of people. This is primarily because many products usually endorse everywhere which makes it loose the site of the people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a personal position: the first body paragraph explains how celebrity endorsements can attract buyers, while the second argues that advertising’s ubiquity and intrusive online formats can make people ignore it. The Vijay Devarakonda skincare example helps illustrate the first view. Your conclusion states that product quality matters, but this shifts the focus somewhat from the two views and does not clearly explain how quality relates to your opinion about advertising’s effectiveness. Some points are also asserted rather than fully explained—for example, the link between seeing many advertisements and losing interest could be developed with a clearer explanation of how consumers respond. A more consistent, explicit position and fuller development of the less-developed points would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the discussion easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical, and some links between ideas are unclear. For example, “Which is one of the reasons…” is a sentence fragment, while “Consequently” introduces a result without fully clarifying the preceding reasoning. The opening sentence is difficult to follow because several ideas are joined together without a clear progression. The conclusion also introduces product quality without connecting it clearly to the earlier discussion. Use clearer sentence boundaries and make each supporting point lead explicitly to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “celebrity,” “social media platforms,” “competitors,” and “sales,” and you attempt more formal expressions such as “significant changes” and “specific audience.” However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less clear. Examples include “relay on advertisementing,” “traditional advertisement,” “loose people’s interest,” and “loose the site of the people.” Some expressions are also repetitive, particularly “products” and “advertisements.” Aim for more natural combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully; greater precision would make your ideas easier to understand and give the vocabulary more flexibility.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “which,” and “although.” However, complex structures are often not controlled successfully, and errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence boundaries recur. For example, “new products usually grabs” should have a plural verb, and “many new products reaches” has the same agreement problem. The opening sentence combines several clauses in a way that obscures the grammatical relationships, while “Which is one of the reasons…” is an incomplete sentence. There are also errors such as “its has been common” and “it may loose.” Practise building accurate sentences with one main idea and then adding subordinate clauses; careful proofreading for agreement and complete sentences will improve clarity.
