IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals believe that advertisments can highly influence the purchasing decisions of us. While others believe that due to very common and excess exposure we do not pay much attention to it. I believe that brand promotions largely influence the way how people purchase the products because brands use highly effective colors and emotional triggers to influence their mindset.

On the one hand, promotions of products are very good at changing the mindset of consumer to buy a product. Brands use different types of attractive visuals like asthetic product images, colorful ads and famous celebrities which shift the mindset of consumers. With the help of ads brands depict that this certain product will give them confident, power or status, so people are willing to buy that product. People will buy that product if they don't even need it. For instance, brands use different types of color psycology to attract consumers and ultimately increasing their sales.

On the other hand, commercials these days are very common so that people started avoiding it. Constant exposure of ads make people used to these videos and images and they don't care it anymore. Nowadays, advertisments are everywhere from roadsides to social media platforms and from product packagings to distribution of pamphlets, this excess promotion makes people avoid these. I disagree with this statement because no matter to what extent people avoid these ads it has an influence on the consumers.

In conclusion, marketing of goods is a best way to let people buy some products but these days advertising has reached at its maximum level. I believe that ads highly influence the purchasing of products as it shifts the mindset of audience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position clearly: advertising can influence purchases despite people becoming accustomed to seeing it. The first body paragraph supports the persuasive view with visuals, celebrities, and emotional appeals, while the second explains how constant exposure may lead people to ignore advertisements. However, the opposing view is less fully explored, and your response quickly rejects it rather than considering when or why advertising might lose its effect. Some support is also broad—for example, the claim that people buy products they do not need would benefit from a more specific explanation or example. Develop both sides more evenly and make your reasoning more precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and the main position remains consistent. Within paragraphs, however, ideas sometimes feel listed rather than developed: the examples of images, colours, and celebrities could be linked more explicitly to the effect on purchasing. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, such as “this excess promotion makes people avoid these,” where the reference of “these” is imprecise. Use clearer referencing and add transitions that show cause and effect, rather than relying mainly on basic paragraph signposts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “purchasing decisions,” “emotional triggers,” “constant exposure,” and “social media platforms.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt less common expressions such as “colour psychology.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, however: “highly influence,” “changing the mindset of consumer,” and “a best way” do not sound idiomatic. There are also spelling errors, including “advertisments,” “asthetic,” and “confident” where the noun “confidence” is needed. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling and word forms carefully; this would make your vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a contrast clause beginning “While others believe…” and a conditional sentence with “if.” Most of the meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors occur across the response. For example, “While others believe…” is a sentence fragment, “Constant exposure of ads make people used to” has problems with agreement and verb construction, and “brands depict that this certain product will give them confident” contains an awkward clause structure and an incorrect noun form. Articles and plural forms also need attention, as in “mindset of consumer.” Practise building complete sentences and checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and verb patterns while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
