IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While some people argue that advertising is the most efficient method at influencing others to buy things, other people believe that it become so widespread that it will not make any impact on customers. In my opinion, advertising in the means of visualization is the most successful way of persuading others.

To begin with, there are several reasons why a lot of individuals think about promotion as the most successful method. A possible reason is that advertising reveals product information to the customers. For example, the information about ingredients, chemicals, safety, and nutrients are written on the labelling of products. Thereby it alows the consumers to make an informed decision. Advertising in the forms of video content can connect the customers emotionally by providing necessary informations to them, and customers end up buying products. That's why, a reputated company always makes advertising of their products.

On the other hand, nowadays promotion is so widespread that it no longer able to attract customers. The reason for this is the lack of creativity in the advertising, and don't try to understand the emotion of customers. When advertising do not provide new informations about the products, people don't find any interest to purchase them since people always look for new about the products. Furthermore, if the advertisement does not take into account the customers sentiment, consumers will no longer pay attention to it beacuse people are driven by their emotions. When things does not go as their emotions, they simply avoid it.

In my opinion, advertising will simply increase the sale of a product because of the information it provides which effectively persuade others by connecting them emotionally and allowing them to make a better decision.

In conclusion, when advertising become so common, it maybe no longer remain successful at persuading others. However, I think that the benefits that advertising provide will eventually be able to influence us to purchase products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your own position: you argue that advertising can persuade through information and emotional connection, while acknowledging that its ubiquity may reduce its impact. The product-labelling example gives the first view some relevant support. However, the discussion is uneven: the claim that advertising is widespread and therefore ignored is explained mainly through a lack of creativity and emotional appeal, without a concrete example or much development of how overexposure itself affects attention. Your conclusion restates your opinion, but the distinction between the two views could be made more precise. Develop each side with a specific example and explain more fully why it supports your argument.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” helps readers follow the discussion, and the main ideas generally progress logically. This meets the lower-band expectations and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, links can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear or repetitive. For example, “When things does not go as their emotions” is difficult to connect precisely to the preceding point, while repeated references to “customers” and “products” make the argument less fluid. Use clearer pronouns or restate the specific idea, and connect examples directly to the claim they support.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “ingredients,” “labelling,” “informed decision,” and “emotionally,” so the reader can understand the subject and your main points. There are also attempts at more formal wording, such as “widespread” and “persuading.” However, the range and control are uneven, with noticeable word-choice, collocation, word-form, and spelling problems. Phrases such as “advertising in the means of visualization,” “make advertising of their products,” and “new about the products” are unnatural or unclear; “reputated” and “beacuse” are also misspelled. Aim for more natural collocations and check spelling and word forms, while avoiding repeated use of “customers” and “products.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “because,” “when,” and “if.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the overall meaning is usually understandable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly in subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and countability. For example, “it become so widespread” should use a matching verb form, “advertising do not provide” needs agreement, and “When things does not go” has an agreement error. There are also problems with plural forms in “informations” and with sentence construction in “and don't try to understand the emotion of customers.” Review agreement and verb forms, and make sure each clause has a clear subject and a complete grammatical structure.
