IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
More and more people believe that advertising is a key tool to motivate consumers to buy goods. While others say that advertising isn't getting enough response from the customer.
On one hand, advertisments are the sources where consumers get attracted to things and tend to get enough information regarding the things that they tnd to buy. Without advertising it's impossible to introduce their items to the market and alo people may be unaware of the things. So advertising provids a clever motive for people to shw interest in buying things.By watching seveal advertisments , buyers get more information about the things they are interested in buying and able to compare a product with another and buy a suitable one to fulfil the need.
On the other hand , in this contemporary world people don't have much time in watching advertisements that is being forcefully showed in social media feed abd also in TV and People like to skip the advertisements that has been showed in may platforms. When watching Cricket podcast or watching an interesting film, if the advertisement is popped up in the middle people become more bored and showed ignorance too the shopkeeper.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You address both views: advertising can inform and persuade consumers, while frequent interruptions may lead people to ignore it. The examples about comparing products and skipping adverts during films or cricket are relevant. However, the discussion is incomplete: the second view is only briefly explained, and there is no clear, direct statement of your own opinion, despite this being a required part of the task. The response also contains 193 words, so it does not meet the 250-word minimum. These omissions leave the ideas limited and under-developed. To improve, state your position explicitly and extend each view with a specific explanation or example, then conclude by showing which view you find more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic overall structure, with an opening followed by paragraphs introduced by “On one hand” and “On the other hand.” This helps readers recognise the two sides of the discussion. Within the first body paragraph, the points about information, product comparison, and consumer interest are broadly connected. However, there is no concluding paragraph, so the essay stops without bringing the discussion together or clarifying your position. Some links are also awkward or repetitive, and the second paragraph shifts quickly from social media to television and then to cricket and films. Organise each view around one main point, use clearer links between examples, and add a conclusion to create a more complete progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “consumers,” “advertising,” “market,” and “compare a product,” which allows the main ideas to be understood. There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “forcefully showed” and “popped up.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. For example, “showed ignorance too the shopkeeper” does not clearly express that viewers ignore an advert, and “advertisments” and “provids” contain spelling errors. Aim for precise, natural phrases and check spelling carefully. For instance, use “ignore the advertisement” and “interrupts the viewing experience” to express your points more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a sentence explaining that buyers can obtain information and compare products. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in sentence boundaries, agreement, articles, and verb forms sometimes make the reader work to understand the meaning. The opening “While others say…” is a fragment rather than a complete sentence, and “people don’t have much time in watching advertisements that is being forcefully showed” contains problems with the verb pattern, agreement, and passive form. Punctuation is also unreliable, particularly around commas and sentence breaks. Practise building complete sentences and checking that subjects and verbs agree; then review articles and verb forms in longer sentences.
