IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is believed that successful advertisement can influence us to buy anything, however others think that the act of advertising has become so common that it can no longer affect us.
In my opinion, i think that advertisement and marketing play a big role in the success of any product. You can have the best item that anyone can use, but if you don't showcase, nobody will find out about it let alone trying it. for example the Google app Playstore has a lot of apps in it, and there are lot of good ones there too, but they have low download counts, this can all go back to the fact that the developer didn't market the app good enough.
On the other hand, I don't agree to the fact that it became common, advertising will always be necessary and important for us to discover new products. It's true that it became used widely compared to the past, but it doesn't negate the fact that it's still necessary and must do process in the life cycle of any product.
In conclusion, advertising is so important and i don't think that we can ever become used to it.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You present a clear view that advertising remains important, and the Play Store example gives relevant support for the idea that promotion can help a product reach consumers. However, the two sides are not discussed equally: the claim that advertising is now so common that people ignore it is mentioned, but its reasoning is not explained or illustrated. Your own position is clear, though the conclusion mainly repeats it rather than drawing the discussion together. The response also contains 197 words, below the required 250, so the task is only partially developed. To strengthen the response, explain why audiences may tune out frequent advertising, then compare that view with your argument and extend both with specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph supporting advertising’s influence, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help readers follow the basic progression. However, the contrast paragraph does not fully develop the opposing view; it quickly shifts to your disagreement, so the discussion’s progression is somewhat uneven. Some links are also mechanical or unclear, particularly “this can all go back to the fact,” which does not precisely connect the example to its cause. Develop each side in a separate, focused sequence and use clearer references to show how each example supports the point being made.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “advertising,” “marketing,” “product,” and “download counts.” There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “life cycle of any product.” However, several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “successful advertisement,” “showcase” without an object, and “market the app good enough.” Repetition of “important,” “necessary,” and “common” also limits the range. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your position, but they reduce precision and naturalness. Aim for accurate collocations and a wider set of terms for audience attention, promotion, and consumer decisions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use both simple and more extended sentence forms, including the contrast in “You can have the best item … but if you don’t showcase, nobody will find out about it.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some errors in sentence boundaries, capitalization, and grammatical patterns are noticeable. For example, “for example the Google app Playstore…” begins a new sentence without a capital letter and needs clearer punctuation; “i think” also requires a capital “I.” The opening sentence joins two independent ideas with a comma before “however,” and “it became used widely” has an awkward verb construction. Practise punctuating joined clauses and checking sentence openings, verb forms, and articles while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
