IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that, advertisements are a powerful means of promoting products for customers purchase. Others believe that, people are used to watch too much advertisements which make them ignorant to the products shown. In my opinion, advertisements can be a great way to let people know about the products if the amount of those can be limited so that people can pay attention to what they are watching.
The main advantage of advertisement is that, it can introduce newly launched product to common people and make them buy it. People sometimes are tempted to buy things by watching a lucrative promotion of the product. Moreover, this tendency is more common among children because they easily get allured by watching them on screens.
However, over exposure to advertisements sometimes create irritation and make people to ignore them. For example, people are now a days shown different kinds of promotions on social media and youtube alongwith tv. This practice sometime make people to skip the ads without paying attention to them. Moreover, people get irritated and ignore whatever is shown.
In conclusion, although advertisements can be an effective way to introduce new products and influence consumers' purchasing decisions, their excessive use may make people less responsive to promotional content. I believe that advertising can remain a powerful marketing tool if companies limit the frequency of advertisements and focus on producing engaging and informative content.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear opinion: advertising can influence buyers, but its impact depends on limiting its frequency. The first body paragraph explains how promotions introduce products and may tempt consumers, with children offered as an example. The second explains that repeated exposure can cause irritation and lead people to skip advertisements. These points are relevant, but some are less fully developed: the discussion of children, for instance, is asserted rather than supported with a specific explanation or example, and the effects of advertising on adult consumers could be explored further. The conclusion restates your position effectively. The response is 17 words below the required minimum, so there is less space to develop and support the ideas. Add a little more explanation or a concrete example to each main point.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion that returns to your opinion. The contrast between the two positions is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “However,” and “In conclusion” help signal the progression. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of more flexible progression. To strengthen cohesion further, avoid relying on the same additive linker twice in close succession and make references more precise. For example, “This practice” could specify the repeated appearance of promotions across platforms. The first sentence also has unnecessary pauses after “believe that,” which interrupt the flow. More developed links between each claim and its example would make the argument feel less list-like.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range for the topic, including relevant expressions such as “lucrative promotion,” “over exposure,” “less responsive,” and “purchasing decisions.” These choices help communicate both the persuasive and irritating effects of advertising, and the meaning remains clear. You also attempt some less common vocabulary, although several choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “allured” does not fit naturally in this context, and “common people” is less suitable than a phrase such as “the general public.” There are also spelling and form issues, including “now a days” and “alongwith.” Aim for more precise collocations and check compound forms and spelling. Using a smaller number of natural, accurate expressions would improve clarity more than adding ambitious vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including a conditional structure in “if the amount of those can be limited” and a concession in the conclusion beginning “although.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “advertisements … for customers purchase” needs a grammatical construction such as “to encourage customers to purchase,” while “over exposure … create” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “make people to ignore them,” the verb pattern should be “make people ignore them.” Articles and plural forms also need attention, as in “newly launched product” and “too much advertisements.” Practise checking agreement, verb patterns, and countable nouns, while retaining the complex sentence forms you already attempt.
