IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, advertising has become a very significant marketting technique used by all the famous brands of the world. Some individuals opine that advertising is the prime factor in making us buy the specefic products becuase we judge the quality of the product by the level of its marketing. Others opine that advertising is no longer important because of the large numbers and our busy lifestyles. This essay will discuss both the opinions backed up by my own perspective.
To begin with the first opinion, advertisements are regarded as succesful enforcers for us because of our mindset. The poor markeing standards highly undermine the quality of the products. The good advertisements make us aware of the specefic products. For instance, there are thousands of chips brands in the world produced by different countries but the only word that comes to our mind when we listen the word chips is "Lays". Different stars like models and actors are hired for the publicity of Lays that makes this product predominantly famous and highly intaked than other chips brands.
Considering the second opinion, the huge number of ads makes them unnoticed. For example, we see a lot of ads in our everyday life. They can be seen on the roadsides, malls, TV shows and this wide range makes the consumers consider them unimportant. Instead of persuading the consumers to buy the products, their frequent appearance gets irritating for them. In today's era, we see hundereds of ads everyday and some of them which are of our concern, get unnoticed because of this barrage of advertisements.
In conclusion, there can be many arguments in support of both the views. In my personal perspective, even if the quantity of the advertisements is so high that they get unnoticed, they still are somehow succesful in making us buy their targetted products. The small quantity of ads will definitely make them noticible to the eyes of the concerned customers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear overall position: advertising can still influence purchases despite being so widespread. The examples of Lays and the many advertisements encountered in daily life are relevant, and the conclusion returns to your opinion. However, the first view is developed more fully than the second: the Lays example explains brand recognition, but the claim that people judge product quality by marketing is not clearly supported. The second paragraph explains irritation and overload, though it could show more precisely how this reduces attention or purchasing. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation and a specific consequence so the discussion is more balanced.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “To begin with,” “Considering the second opinion,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow, and the examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. This meets the lower-band expectations securely and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, several links feel formulaic, and some references are not fully clear—for example, “this wide range” refers broadly to the locations and volume of advertisements. The transition from the Lays example to the general claim about advertising could also be more explicit. Use fewer stock transitions and connect each example directly to the point it supports.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “mindset,” “publicity,” “consumers,” “unnoticed,” and “barrage of advertisements.” These choices help communicate the main ideas, and some less common expressions are attempted. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “marketting,” “specefic,” “succesful,” and “targetted.” Some combinations are also unnatural or unclear, such as “highly intaked” and “the only word that comes to our mind when we listen the word chips.” These issues sometimes make the reader pause, although the overall meaning remains understandable. Check spelling carefully and prioritise natural collocations over ambitious but uncertain phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a contrastive clause in “even if the quantity … is so high that they get unnoticed” and a relative clause in “some of them which are of our concern.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “when we listen the word chips” is missing a preposition, and “Different stars … are hired … that makes this product” has an unclear clause connection and agreement. The sentence beginning “The small quantity of ads” also needs a clearer grammatical relationship to the preceding point. Work on clause structure, agreement, and prepositions, then proofread longer sentences to ensure each clause connects correctly.
