IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Some people say that advertisement persuades us to buy things while others consider that it is becoming so common that we are not taking interested in it anymore.
One community of people is highly satisfied with the purpose of advertisement and believe that it is a very successful practice to attract community to buy things through advertisement. They think that people are getting pleased with the breathtaking views of the clothes which are being displayed in the front section of the shop for advertisement purpose and they urge to look and dress like the dummy model who is wearing different sorts of colorful outfits. So they believe that it is becoming easy to decide their favourite clothes by assuming themselves in place of the dummy person who is standing in the displayed section with wearing clothes as an advertisement.
While, some people consider that advertisement has no longer future in attracting the audiences as this activity is becoming very common in society in practical and people are getting bored of it and they show no keen interest in it. They believe that there are many other ways to gain public interest apart from advertisement and the modern era is launching much pleasing products for persuading people to buy things.
I personally give importance to new innovations which has the ultimate potential which can attract and engage more people and is less expensive as I think people are getting bored of old products that's why they prefer alternative ways which are more attractive instead of advertisement. I give preference to the thoughts of people who are not in favor of advertisement.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and state your own preference, so the response addresses the main parts of the prompt. The example of shop displays and mannequins gives some support to the view that advertising can influence purchases. However, this explanation is narrow and repetitive, and the opposing view is less clearly developed: the claim that “modern era is launching much pleasing products” does not explain how this makes advertising less effective. Your opinion also shifts toward “new innovations” without clearly distinguishing innovation from advertising itself. To strengthen the response, explain each view with a more direct reason or example, then make your position explicit and show why you find that argument more convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, a paragraph for each view, and a concluding paragraph giving your opinion. This makes the discussion easy to follow at a broad level. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes weak because ideas repeat rather than build; for example, the first main paragraph repeatedly describes people choosing clothes after seeing a display. The opening “While,” also creates an awkward transition, and the long first body paragraph would benefit from clearer separation between the claim and its example. Use linking expressions selectively and make references more precise, so readers can see how each supporting point connects to the argument rather than encountering repeated statements.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “persuading,” “attract,” “audiences,” and “innovations,” and you attempt less common descriptive language such as “breathtaking views” and “colorful outfits.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “advertisement” is repeated where “advertising” is more suitable, “not taking interested” is unclear, and “pleased with the purpose” does not express the intended idea naturally. Some phrases, such as “dummy person” and “displayed section,” are also imprecise for this context. Build a more reliable range of collocations for discussing consumer behaviour and media, and avoid ornate wording when a direct expression would communicate the point more clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning with “while” and “as,” and most of the main ideas remain understandable. However, there are some recurring errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “people … believe” does not agree with the singular subject “One community,” while “innovations which has” has a plural-subject agreement error. The construction “who is standing … with wearing clothes” is also faulty, and the first body paragraph contains a run-on sentence after “advertisement.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement and simplifying sentences that contain several linked clauses. More accurate control of these patterns would make your complex sentences clearer.
