IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some believe that advertisement is really successful to convince us to purchase products. Other believe it is very common that we no longer give attention to it and I totally agree with this view because these advertisements do not really worth to seek attention.
On the one hand, advertisement is really successful and we see them on everywhere. For example, on the roads, on the billboards, on the television, in a shopping mall screens everywhere. When people watch any particular ad again and again then it really influence people to buy such product. For instance, when people from different nationalities visit Dubai Mall and they see the advertisements of a particular perfume then they really inspire to buy that product because this ad was created in such a way to influence people.
On the other hand, advertisement is really very common nowadays that people do not pay attention to it. For instance, when people watch a particular video on youtube there are many ads appear in between but people really rush to skip the ad. Furthermore, Some people think that these advertisements are just only for show-off and nothing else. The promotion of the brand is just to seek attention so that people can buy them but these products are not worth it to buy due to their costs. I totally agree with this view and also I do not like to watch ads because I think them a wastage of time.
In conclusion, although advertising is successful enough to persuade people to purchase things, on the other hand it is no longer gain attention.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and state a clear opinion: you agree that advertising is so common that people often ignore it. The first body paragraph explains how repeated exposure can persuade consumers, while the second gives a relevant example of viewers skipping online ads and adds your view that some products are not worth their cost. This covers the task, but the discussion is unevenly developed: the first view relies mainly on repetition and the Dubai Mall perfume example, while the second includes several claims that are asserted rather than explained. The conclusion also repeats the contrast without clearly restating your own position. Develop each view with a fuller explanation and make your final opinion explicit to strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and examples are placed with the relevant arguments. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. The second body paragraph moves from skipping online ads to claims about show-off and product costs without explaining how these points relate. The conclusion’s “although … on the other hand” construction is awkward and does not clearly resolve the discussion. Use linking phrases more selectively, and make the relationship between each example and its main point explicit. Clearer referencing would also help avoid repetition of “advertisement” and “people.”
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “persuading,” “purchase,” “billboards,” “promotion,” and “influence.” There are also attempts to express specific concepts, such as repeated exposure and skipping online advertisements. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive: “successful to convince,” “inspire to buy,” “seek attention,” and “a wastage of time” do not sound natural in context. “Advertisement” is repeated frequently where “advertising,” “adverts,” or “commercials” would provide variety. These choices do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they limit precision and fluency. Learn common collocations for discussing consumer behaviour and check whether a noun, verb, or adjective form is needed.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “When people watch any particular ad again and again then it really influence people to buy such product.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but some errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction remain. For example, “it really influence” should use a verb agreeing with “it,” and “such product” needs a plural or an article. In “there are many ads appear in between,” the clause structure is faulty; use “many ads appear” or “there are many ads appearing.” The opening sentence also joins two views and your opinion in a way that is difficult to follow. Review subject–verb agreement and practise building accurate complex sentences.
