IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern world, all methods of advertising are essential to convince people to buy products, and this is some people perspective. While another group of consumers think that advertising is something that happens regularly and is common, which makes people not pay attention to it. For each perspective, there are benefits and advantages, and it depends on many factors.

Firstly, the category of people who believe in the importance of advertising and how it makes customers buy products. The reason for this is that advertising introduces people to the product usage and its benefits, with a spotlight in what people can need this product for in their daily lives. For example, marketing or advertising bring accessibilty for coustomers and to know about a product or a service that they need and were looking for it, but they did not know where or how they can reach it. Moreover, advertising persuades us to buy products by the method the marketing team are using by studying the coustomers behavier, and using creative approaches to make the ads attractive to try the products.

The second perspective, that think that advertising is common in a way that makes people are no longer interisted or pay attention anymore to it. The reason for this, is that the market nowdays is so stuffed and overwhemed by a significant numbers of adevrtisment, thus, people are feeling boring from watching adds every where, therefore, they are no longer pay attention due to the huge distrections that they expossed to. Another reason for this, is some times advertisment are giving false information about the products only to persuading people to buy it and benefits from reaching a high number of sales.

Finaly, what is my opinion about both perspectives? The answer to this question is I believe that both opinions are right, and it depends on people's preferences. Personally, I some times persuad by ads to buy a product, and other times I feel that I am not interested in advertising. Also, it depends on my needs at the time I am viewing this ad.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and give a personal position: advertising can persuade you at times, but its effect depends on your needs and preferences. The first view is supported with relevant points about product awareness and targeted, attractive campaigns. You also explain that advertising saturation and misleading claims can make people ignore ads. This meets the task, but the two sides are not developed equally: the first view includes an example of helping customers find a needed service, while the second relies mainly on general claims. Your conclusion repeats that both views can be true rather than weighing when or why one is more influential. Develop each argument with a specific example and make your final judgement more decisive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a concluding opinion. The sequence is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “The second perspective,” and “Finaly” help readers identify the stages of the discussion. This is a solid organisational foundation. However, some linking is mechanical or awkward, and several sentences contain too many connected ideas. For example, the second-view paragraph links market saturation, boredom, and distraction in one long chain, making the relationships less clear. The opening phrase “For each perspective, there are benefits and advantages” also does not clearly prepare the reader for the arguments that follow. Use more precise transitions and divide complex explanations into shorter, logically connected sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “advertising,” “persuades,” “customers,” “false information,” and “sales,” and you attempt more specific expressions such as “creative approaches” and “significant numbers of advertisements.” This gives you enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas. However, spelling errors and inaccurate word combinations are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: examples include “accessibilty,” “coustomers,” “behavier,” “stuffed,” and “feeling boring.” Some wording is also imprecise, such as “benefits and advantages,” which repeats the same idea. Aim to learn accurate collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for ad saturation, consumer attention, and misleading claims would make the discussion clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “while,” “which,” and “that,” and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, control is inconsistent, particularly in sentence structure, agreement, and verb forms. For instance, “The second perspective, that think…” is not a complete, well-formed sentence, while “people are no longer pay attention” combines incompatible verb forms. In “the method the marketing team are using,” the subject and verb do not agree, and “I some times persuad” has an incorrect verb form. Some sentences also become difficult to follow because several clauses are joined together. Practise forming complete topic sentences and checking subject–verb agreement and verb patterns in each sentence.
