IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

To make any product successful it is very commen nowdays to do advertisement, so that people get aware about the product or services and the sales grow because of that, but reacently advertising isso common that you can see hundreds of advertisements everyday and there is high chance you can just ignore most of the advertisements.

Some people believe that having so many adds are just waste of money because the number of posters or adds you see everyday is huge and it's hard to pay attention, but on the other side, some people say that advertising is highly successful atpersuding peopleto buy things. In following paragraphs there is discussion about both point of views.

On the one hand, people who believe that advertisements are very important and it works because it make masses to buy things are usually the people who are into advertisement industry or people who are aware about themselves that things are getting sell to them. Furthermore, people ususally don't know if they are getting influanced by the advertisements. People who have data and those who are aware about sorroundings can tell if it works or not. Since you can still see alot of advertisements, it is hightly possible that advertising works.

On the other hand, general public don't believe that advertisemtns works and they believe that they are choosing products or services on their own choices. Moreover, it's very commen that people are not aware when they get influenced to buy things. There is one another reason why advertisements increace sales because it also reach people who really need to buy the things but advertisement just make them to buy the product they are seeing. Seeing the same brand or product make the people turst that and it tends to force people but it.

Overall, Advertisement does work and it influnce people to buy things. Sometiems, people buy things that they even don't need. Even when you consciously ignores the adds, you subconscious still register it. When you see the same advertisment again and again it makes people to buy the products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views and give a clear overall opinion: you argue that advertising influences purchases, including unconsciously. The discussion is relevant, and the point that repeated exposure can build trust gives some support to your position. However, the two views are not developed evenly or precisely. For example, the claim that people who support advertising are usually in the industry is asserted rather than explained, and the opposing view is described mainly as people believing they choose independently. The essay also shifts between whether advertising is noticed and whether it is effective, without fully explaining how these ideas relate. Develop each side with a specific example or clearer reasoning, and make your position explicit earlier and consistent throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion, so the reader can identify its broad structure. Linking phrases such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “Overall” help signal the stages of the discussion. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear: the first body paragraph moves from industry insiders to public awareness and then to the continued presence of advertisements without making the links explicit. The second body paragraph also combines independent choice, reaching people who need a product, and trust in repeated brands. Some connections, such as “There is one another reason,” are awkward or unclear. Organise each paragraph around one main claim and use clearer references to show how each supporting point relates to it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “influenced,” “consciously,” “subconscious,” and “sales,” and you attempt to express ideas about consumer behaviour. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, sometimes making the reader pause: “commen,” “persuding,” “influanced,” and “sorroundings.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “make masses to buy things,” “things are getting sell to them,” and “force people but it.” These issues reduce precision even though the general meaning is usually recoverable. Build a bank of accurate topic collocations, such as “persuade consumers to purchase,” “influence buying decisions,” and “repeated brand exposure,” and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when,” and “even when.” This shows some range, but complex structures are often faulty and errors occur frequently. For example, “having so many adds are just waste” has problems with agreement and article use, while “it make masses to buy things” has an incorrect verb form and construction. In “Seeing the same brand or product make the people turst that,” the subject–verb agreement and sentence structure are unclear. The opening sentence also runs several ideas together, making the relationships difficult to follow. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a clearly controlled subordinate clause, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
