IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Advertising campaigns are vital for a company as they hold the potential to increase sales and revenue by successfully convincing their target audiences to purchase their products and services. It is so common across various digital and physical media that it has become a part of our daily lives. The factor for any product's success or failure is its marketing and advertising so regardless how good a product is, it can fail if with inadequate advertising. Some believe that advertisments have changed their lives while for others believe that we are accustomed to advertisments that we can ignore them.
Marketing companies are very smart. They know exactly how to market their product to an audience. There are many examples of certain television adverts that we grew up with. All the nostalgic memories that remind us of our childhood. For many of us it was an ad about a certain car, a cellphone or investment policies. Most of these ads convinced us to signup for particular products and services.
On the other hand most of us tend to ignore specific advertisments. Billboard advertising for example, I think get ignored easily for their placements on places such as motorways, boulevards, an avenue or a street. Most people who are driving tend to ignore billboards because it can be very dangerous to take our sights off the road. In my personal experience however, I believe that ads on website and mobile phone ads and perhaps social media tend to get ignored the most. Rather than attracting, these advertisments annoy us. Ads on these web based platforms are show after every single click on a new page or a video and are often unskippable. These ads have pushed us away instead of attracting new customers.
Overall, I believe advertising has been successful with persuading us to buy their products. There are many great products backed by convincing great ads which makes me their regular consumers this day. Companies should strategically decide how to win their audiences attention through creative, entertaining and impressionable means instead of being extremely vague, overpromising and pushy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You address both views and give a clear overall opinion: the opening recognises advertising’s reach, while the conclusion states that it has persuaded you to buy products. The examples of nostalgic television adverts and intrusive online ads are relevant and help explain why advertising can influence some people yet be ignored or resented by others. However, the two sides are not developed equally. The claim that adverts “convinced us to signup” is asserted without explaining how they persuade, and the discussion of online advertising focuses more on annoyance than on whether people actually ignore it. Develop each view with a specific explanation or example, and make your position more explicit earlier in the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting advertising’s persuasive power, a contrasting paragraph about ignored adverts, and a concluding opinion. Transitions such as “On the other hand” and “Overall” help signal the direction of the argument. Some connections, however, are unclear or mechanical. The sentence “All the nostalgic memories that remind us of our childhood” is a fragment, and its link to the claim about purchasing is not fully explained. The opening also moves quickly from advertising’s prevalence to product success without showing how the ideas relate. Build clearer topic sentences and connect each example directly to the point it supports; this will make the progression more consistently logical.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “target audiences,” “nostalgic memories,” “unskippable,” and “overpromising,” which helps communicate relevant ideas. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “strategically decide” and “creative, entertaining” advertising. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “signup for particular products,” “ads on website,” and “impressionable means.” Spelling errors such as “advertisments” recur, and “investment policies” is not a natural example of a product advert in this context. Aim for precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. A broader range of accurate expressions for persuasion, consumer response, and advertising formats would make the discussion more flexible.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional phrasing in “regardless how good a product is, it can fail” and a relative clause in “ads … that we grew up with.” Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “for others believe” lacks a grammatical subject construction, “I think get ignored” is missing a subject, and “ads … are show” has an incorrect verb form. The fragment “All the nostalgic memories that remind us of our childhood” also needs to be joined to a complete sentence. There are issues with agreement and sentence construction in “which makes me their regular consumers.” Review clause structure, verb forms, and subject–verb agreement, while retaining the variety of sentence patterns you attempt.
