IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some individuals say that advertising is highly successful at influencing us to purchase products while other people argue that advertising is now very familiar to a point where we do not pay attention to it anymore. In my opinion, I agree with the people that say advertising is highly successful at influencing us to buy products

In this social media era, advertising is a great way of convincing people to buy products because the it makes the product widely known to us the consumers. For example, when a social media influencer is used to market a product, the people that follow that particular influencer are persuaded to buy because most people see influencers as their role models therefore, whatever the influencer markets, we are influenced to buy.

Moreso, advertising gives insight on how a product work therefore when we get more information we are persuaded to buy. For example, when advertising a skincare brand, many advertisers mention exactly what a product does. Some products exfoliate the skin, some brighten the skin and some protects the skin from the sun. As a result, many people are persuaded to buy products that they believe will fix specific areas of their skins because they are well informed about each product being advertised.

However, other people do not pay attention to some adverts especially when they are already familiar with the product. Some people may be looking for new products entirely and not the one they are already familiar with.

In conclusion, advertising yields big results in influencing us to buy products to a greater extent especially when the adverts are done by our role models although it also depends on product familiarity which may result in us ignoring the adverts.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state your position clearly: you support advertising’s persuasive power, while acknowledging that familiarity can lead people to ignore some adverts. The two supporting paragraphs give relevant reasons, including influencers’ role-model status and product information, with examples from social media and skincare. This is a solid response to the task. However, the opposing view is treated much less fully: the point that people may seek new products rather than familiar ones is brief and does not explain how widespread advertising itself causes them to stop noticing adverts. Develop this side with a clearer explanation or example, and extend the discussion of when advertising is effective versus when it is ignored.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, two paragraphs supporting advertising’s influence, a paragraph presenting the opposing view, and a conclusion. The progression is easy to follow, and examples generally appear alongside the points they support. Connectors such as “For example,” “As a result,” and “However” help signal relationships between ideas. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and also shows some stronger control through paragraphing and logical sequencing. To make the flow more flexible, avoid relying on the same explanatory pattern in both supporting paragraphs, and make the contrast in the opposing paragraph more explicit. The conclusion could also synthesise both views rather than mainly restating the preferred position.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for discussing advertising and persuasion, with relevant expressions such as “influencing us to purchase products,” “role models,” “widely known,” and “familiar with the product.” You also use topic-specific language such as “exfoliate,” “brighten,” and “advertisers,” which helps make the skincare example concrete. Some wording is repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “persuaded to buy” and “products,” and a few choices are imprecise or awkward, such as “advertising yields big results” and “fix specific areas of their skins.” These do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a wider set of collocations for consumer behaviour and advertising effectiveness, and check word forms and phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when,” and “although.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the longer sentences show an attempt to explain cause and result. Some grammatical errors persist, however. For example, “the it makes” contains an unnecessary article, “how a product work” has a subject–verb agreement error, and “some protects the skin” should agree with the plural subject. The sentence beginning “when a social media influencer is used” also runs several ideas together, making punctuation and clause boundaries difficult to manage. Aim for more consistent agreement and articles, and divide long sentences where needed so that complex structures remain controlled.
