IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Advertising is perfect way of grabbing wide range of audience from different age group, it is widely argued that advertising is most succesful way of convincing people to purchase goods, while other believe that advertisement of products is now unpopular that it is rarely seen by people. I believe that advertisement attracts huge crowd to buy things by describing its features and it is becoming unpopular because of technological advancement.

On the one hand, TV ads plays vital role to make people decisive to buy useful and reliable things by representing its quality and speciality. For example, Apple company launches its products evry year such as smartphones, tablets and watches, due to its cutting edge technology and powerful inbuild system advertise on TV and social media, many people rushes to buy as soon as possible, although in reality the features are not reliable as shown on the TV screens, however the product got popular among people by the ad companies,

On the other hand, people are less intrested to watch advertisments due to the evolution of technology such as internet, it is the best way to review and check anything before purchasing anyhting, due to that public are less attentive to watch the ads. For instance, Indian people buys immense amount of things on the festival of Diwali, they do not spend their quality time to watch the advertisements on TV and other social media platforms because they directly visits to the nearest stores and the store representative briefly explain about the products, if they feels reliable at that moment they go for it to buy, moreover, behind the less attention to the ads there is a reason of trust issue of the product.

To conclude that, people are being coninced by the commercial ad companies due to its fancy representaion, hence it makes the individual to think of it once. However, due to the unpopularity and growing technology people are not intrested to watch long ads instead of watch it live or in the offline stores.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and give a position: advertising can persuade people through product presentation, while technological change and trust concerns may reduce attention to it. The Apple example supports the persuasive side, and the Diwali shopping example illustrates how people may rely on stores instead of advertisements. These are relevant examples, but some points are not fully explained. In particular, the claim that advertising is becoming unpopular because of technology needs clearer reasoning: online platforms can also carry advertising, so explain how technology specifically makes people less attentive. Your conclusion restates both sides, but your own view could be stated more decisively. Develop the examples and clarify your position to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and the examples are placed with the relevant arguments. However, some sentences contain several ideas joined together, making the progression harder to follow. For example, the Apple sentence moves from product launches to technology, advertising, consumer behaviour, and doubts about reliability without clear breaks. The conclusion also repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use shorter sentences to separate claims and explanations, and make references such as “it” and “they” more precise. This would make cohesion less mechanical and the argument easier to track.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “persuading,” “cutting edge technology,” “evolution of technology,” and “trust issue.” These choices show an attempt to discuss advertising and consumer behaviour beyond very basic terms. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation, and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the meaning less natural. For example, “advertising is perfect way” and “advertisement of products is now unpopular” do not express the intended ideas idiomatically; “advertising is an effective way” and “people have become less attentive to advertisements” would be clearer. There are also spelling errors such as “succesful,” “intrested,” and “coninced.” Check spelling carefully and learn common word partnerships so your vocabulary is more precise and consistently appropriate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “although,” “because,” and “if.” This gives the response some variety, and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, sentence control is uneven, particularly in long sentences that combine several clauses. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and verb forms: “TV ads plays” should be “TV ads play,” “many people rushes” should be “many people rush,” and “people buys” should be “people buy.” The opening also needs an article: “Advertising is a perfect way.” Improve accuracy by checking subject–verb agreement and articles, and divide long sentences into shorter units with clear punctuation. This will help your complex ideas remain clear.
