IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

At present, an adequate number of individuals believe that for selling any kind of products online and offline promotion is essential to manipulate customers, whereas others disagree and think that people have no time to give extra attention towards add. I would agree with the latter viewpoint because such initiative promote false news of products.

On the one hand, providing details of certain unknown products is the main reason why some people think that advertising is important at persuading people to buy goods. When any newly made product launch at market, we do no know the aspects and quality of this product. By the way, advertising help us to know more. Sometimes, add provide the details of their products which help us to study of these things. However, I disagree with the argument above because individuals can research any products through google and chatgpt.

On the other hand, some argue in favour of advertising because they believe that most of the time add publish false news of products. I firmly support this idea because at present add hide their negetive aspects of their products and citizens buy such goods after seeing the positive publicity. At the latter time, when people find the goods is not in qualites. As a result, peole lost thei hobe and they considering add always hide the bad qualities of the products.

In conclusion, although add reveals hidden details of any goods I strongly believe that most of the time advertising publish false news of the products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You present a position in the introduction and conclusion, and you attempt to discuss both views: advertising can introduce unfamiliar products, while it may conceal their drawbacks. However, the response only partially develops the task. The first view is explained briefly, and the opposing view is mainly supported by the general claim that advertisements hide negative aspects; there is no specific example or fuller explanation of how this affects buying decisions. Your opinion also shifts: you say you agree with people who ignore advertising, but later say you support the claim that advertising publishes false information. Clarify whether your main point is that advertising is ineffective or that it is persuasive but misleading, then develop that position consistently with relevant support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” make the intended structure visible. However, progression within the paragraphs is not always clear. For example, the first body paragraph moves from advertising introducing products to online research without explaining how this answers the view that advertising persuades people. In the second, “At the latter time” introduces an unclear sequence, and the final sentence does not clearly connect the buyer’s disappointment to the claim about advertising. Some linking phrases are repetitive or awkward. Build each paragraph around one clear claim, explain it in a logical sequence, and use pronouns and transitions that make the relationships between ideas explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “promotion,” “products,” “positive publicity” and “negative aspects,” so the reader can identify the topic and your main concerns. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making meaning difficult to follow. “Manipulate customers” is stronger than the point you explain, while “false news of products” is not a natural way to describe misleading advertising. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “negetive,” “qualites” and “peole.” Aim for precise, natural phrases such as “influence consumers,” “misleading claims” and “product quality.” Check spelling carefully and avoid repeating “add” when you mean “advertisement” or “advertising.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a contrast in the opening and a conditional structure beginning “When any newly made product…”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction can make some ideas hard to understand. Examples include “advertising help us,” “such initiative promote,” and “When any newly made product launch at market.” The fragment “At the latter time, when people find the goods is not in qualites” also lacks a complete, well-formed main clause. Practise building accurate subject–verb–object sentences first, then add subordinate clauses. Pay particular attention to singular/plural agreement, verb forms after subjects, and complete sentences.
