IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 4.0)
It is generally believed that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things while on the other hand some people also think that we do not need to pay attention to it as it is so common.
Advertisement is a big source to tell people about your products and materials which we want to sell. In this way customers have more chances to know about products. Also the buyers have overview about materials. For example when we post a video on social media on any platform like tiktok, and instagram, when that video get more views viewers think that it is very usefull and they make decission to buy this.
Without advertisement we faced many challenages. Some citizens also think that it is only waste of time to give attention on posters and ads related to any materials. Secondally

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
You introduce both views in the opening sentence and give relevant points about advertising informing customers, including the example of social-media videos. However, the response does not develop the discussion of both views: the claim that advertising is so common that people ignore it appears only briefly, and the final word “Secondally” leaves the argument unfinished. Your own opinion is also not clearly stated. The response contains 130 words, so it does not meet the 250-word minimum; 11 words copied from the task prompt were excluded from that count. To improve, explain each view with a reason or example, state your position directly, and complete the essay with a conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
The opening signals the two sides of the issue, and the next paragraph gives a relevant example to support the idea that advertising can influence buyers. However, the response has little overall progression: it moves from advertising’s informational role to a social-media example, then to challenges and people ignoring ads without clearly connecting these points. The transition “Without advertisement” does not make the relationship between the preceding and following ideas clear, while “Secondally” is left incomplete. Use separate paragraphs for the two views and your opinion, and connect each point with clear explanations and references. A complete ending would also help the reader follow the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “persuading,” “customers,” “social media,” and “viewers,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices or forms are inaccurate or repetitive, such as “materials” for products and “give attention on” for paying attention to something. Spelling errors including “usefull,” “decission,” and “challenages” also reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise topic vocabulary and check spelling and collocations. For example, “advertising campaign,” “consumer awareness,” and “purchase decision” would help you express the ideas more clearly and appropriately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including a sentence beginning “For example when we post a video…,” but control is uneven. Errors in verb forms and agreement occur in “when that video get more views” and “we faced many challenges”; the first needs a singular verb, and the second does not fit the general present-time meaning. The long example sentence also lacks clear punctuation and becomes difficult to follow. There are some understandable clauses, but greater accuracy and a wider range of controlled structures are needed. Practise forming complete sentences, maintaining consistent tense, and using punctuation to separate introductory phrases and clauses.
