IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Opinios are divided over the influence of advertisements on us. Some believe that advertisements influences people to buy products, while others believe that too many ads has desentisized people causing them to not pay attention to the advertisements anymore. I believe that, even though ads have become too much common , they still play an massive role over people deciding on what products they should buy.
Businesses make newer products and advertises that product. There could be many companies making the same thing. So to gain people's attention, companies chase novelty. Newer amenities attract customers to buy that product. People come to know about these new facilities and combodies that companies are making, through advertisements. These advertisements can be on TV, radio or leaflets. Companies showcase their products in such a way that people can be easily persuaded. Again there lies a phycological reason as to why people can be easily moved. When people see the advertisements to products with newer and latest technology, they want it for themselves. This desire motivates them to buy things.
However, advertisements also have some negative developments. Every new company spends money to advertise their products. Nowadays, every TV channel shows advertisements of many products or sometimes ads of same products produced by different companies. All these ads lead to a decision fatique to people. People become confused as which good is better or which company to trust leading to unability of making a decision. Sometimes, people remain uncontent after buying a product and seeing another ad claiming that their product is superior. Too many ads also leads to people not paying attention too them. TV channels showing the same ads may causes people to be annoyed as it keeps interrupting their shows.
From my perspective, advertisements have more advantages than disadvantages. Many people buy things after seeing ads. Advertisements also give newer companies a chance to grow. Most of its disadvantages come from people's own undecisiveness. TV channels should regulate ads to avoid their overcrowding. Companies can also advertise other ways such as using leaflets, banner etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a clear opinion: advertisements can influence purchasing, but their overuse can make people ignore them, and you conclude that their advantages outweigh their disadvantages. The first view is supported with a relevant explanation of how novelty and product features create desire. The discussion of overexposure also includes useful consequences, such as confusion and irritation. This covers the task well, while some points are less fully developed: for example, the claim that advertising gives new companies a chance to grow is asserted rather than explained, and the final suggestions about regulating ads and using leaflets are not clearly connected to your overall argument. Develop these points with specific reasoning or examples to make the response more consistently persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion stating your position. The contrast between the main arguments is easy to follow, and transitions such as “However” and “From my perspective” help signal the direction of the discussion. Within paragraphs, though, some links are mechanical or unclear. For instance, “Again there lies a phycological reason” does not clearly connect the preceding explanation to the next point, while “All these ads lead to a decision fatique to people” makes the relationship difficult to process. The conclusion also introduces several recommendations without showing how they follow from the earlier discussion. Use clearer referencing and connect each supporting point explicitly to the paragraph’s main idea.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “novelty,” “persuaded,” “decision fatigue,” and “overcrowding,” and these choices help communicate the main ideas. There are also attempts at less common expressions, but some are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “newer amenities” and “combodies” do not convey the intended meaning clearly, and “a decision fatique to people” is an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “desentisized,” “phycological,” and “undecisiveness” also reduce control. Aim for accurate, natural combinations—for example, “product features,” “decision-making fatigue,” and “indecisiveness”—and check spelling carefully. This would make your vocabulary more flexible and precise without changing the substance of your argument.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “even though ads have become…” and “When people see the advertisements…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “advertisements influences” and “too many ads has,” while “TV channels showing the same ads may causes” also has an incorrect verb form. Articles and sentence construction need attention in “they still play an massive role” and “leading to unability of making a decision.” There are also punctuation and spacing slips, such as the space before the comma in “common ,”. These errors rarely prevent understanding, but proofreading agreement, articles, and clause structure would improve accuracy while preserving your range.
