IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is irrefutable that advertisements can be found in almost every area of our daily life, whether on the internet, television or visually in public areas such transports or the banners on the walls or side of the roads. While several people consider commercials beneficial, some argue that these are useless. This essay intends to discuss both the views along with my viewpoints in the forthcoming paragraphs.

To begin with, advertisements play an essential role in our everyday life which are listed as follows. Firstly, it keeps people updated about new products or the changes in the version of products. Secondly, it informs users about the price changes and the use of features of the products. Thirdly, consumers can compare the prices of the products and buy things suitable to their needs and interest.

Moreover, in business areas, advertising helps the businesses to appear in the market and attract customers. It makes them stand out among their other competitors and increase thier sales. Finally, it helps users to be aware of a newly associated business.

On the other hand, advertisements also have several drawbacks. Sometimes, ads can be too repetitive and boring if it is only focused on selling the products. People might be interested in it if it has a unique storyline or visually better quality. Commercials can also be fake and mislead people about the information of the products. Several people complain that ads disrupt their entertainment by disturbing them while they watch something on televisions or mobiles.

To conclude, advertisements have both, benefits and drawbacks but, advantages of commercials definitely outweighs the disadvantages.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address both views by explaining how advertising informs consumers and helps businesses, then noting repetition, misleading claims and interruptions. Your conclusion also gives a clear preference: the advantages outweigh the disadvantages. However, the discussion does not fully match the question’s contrast between advertising persuading people to buy and people no longer paying attention because it is so common. The first view is mostly presented as providing information, rather than showing how ads influence purchasing decisions; the second is only partly developed through repetition and interruption. Some points, such as being aware of a newly associated business, are unclear. Develop each side with a specific explanation or example, and make your opinion more directly address advertising’s persuasive power.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs presenting benefits and drawbacks, and a conclusion. Sequencing is generally easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “On the other hand” help readers identify the direction of the argument. However, the repeated “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Thirdly” make the benefits paragraph feel like a list rather than a developed discussion. Some connections between ideas are also abrupt: the point about businesses appearing in the market is followed by an unclear statement about a “newly associated business.” Group related points and explain how one leads to another; use referencing more precisely so each sentence connects smoothly to the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range for the topic, including “mislead,” “competitors,” “repetitive,” and “stand out,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “play an essential role” and “outweighs the disadvantages.” However, some word choices and collocations are unnatural or imprecise: “visually in public areas,” “the use of features,” and “newly associated business” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Spelling errors such as “thier” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural topic-specific combinations, for example “advertisements displayed in public places,” “explain product features,” and “a newly established business.” Proofread spelling and avoid formal-sounding phrases when a simpler, more precise expression is available.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the opening clause beginning “whether on the internet” and the conditional sentence “People might be interested in it if…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. In “advertisements play an essential role… which are listed,” the relative clause does not agree clearly with its reference; “the benefits are as follows” would be more accurate. “It makes them stand out…and increase their sales” also shifts from a singular subject to a plural verb; use “increases.” In the conclusion, “advantages… outweighs” has a subject–verb agreement error, and punctuation around “both” and “but” is awkward. Check agreement, clause references, and punctuation, while continuing to vary sentence structures.
