Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Advertising is a way of promoting a product, service, or business to attract the people's attention and encourage them to buy or use it. Advertisement plays an important role in social media like Instagram, shorts or Facebook. Some people thought that advertisement is very successful to buy things, while others argue that advertising was no longer to pay attention.

On the one hand, some people thought about that advertising is successful to buy things. Because it gives a lot of information about the new products, services and also the job opportunities, respectively. People was greatly facilitate from it. For instance, if any people want to search a job, advertisement and social media platforms informs about it and people can easily find it. There is also a opportunity to get awareness from the sales through advertising, sharply.

On the other hand, some people thought that advertising is common that people become bored from it and they were no longer pay attention to it. They thought those advertisements that are no longer and old, they became the wastage of time. Some advertisements provide misleading information. People sometimes waste money on unnecessary products. Repeated advertisements may become boring.

To conclude, advertising is an important part of modern life. Although people sometimes ignore advertisements, they still influence our choices. Therefore, advertisements should be informative, honest and attractive.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You address both views and give a concluding position: advertising can influence choices, even though people sometimes ignore it. The examples about job advertisements and misleading claims are relevant. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The first view is mainly explained through information and job opportunities, rather than showing clearly how advertising persuades people to buy products; the second view lists boredom, wasted time and unnecessary spending without explaining these points in depth. Your own opinion appears most clearly in the conclusion, so it is not fully established across the essay. The response is also 27 words below the required minimum. Develop each view with a specific example and make your position clearer in the introduction and body.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The essay has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two paragraphs presenting opposing views, and a conclusion. The signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the contrast, and the conclusion returns to the topic. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven. The first body paragraph moves from product information to job opportunities and sales awareness without clearly linking these points to persuasion. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, such as “Because it gives a lot of information” and “They thought those advertisements that are no longer and old.” Use complete topic sentences, then explain and illustrate one main idea at a time. Clearer links between claims and examples would make the organisation more coherent and less list-like.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “promoting,” “misleading information,” “unnecessary products” and “influence our choices,” so the reader can understand the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are noticeably inaccurate, sometimes making meaning difficult to follow. For example, “successful to buy things” does not express the idea of persuading consumers, while “people become bored from it” and “get awareness from the sales” are unnatural. “Advertisement” is also repeated frequently where “advertising” or “advertisements” would fit better. Build a more precise set of expressions for consumer behaviour and advertising, and check whether words combine naturally before using them.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, including a contrast with “Although people sometimes ignore advertisements” and a conditional example beginning “if any people want to search a job.” However, the range is limited, and attempts at more complex structures are often faulty. Errors in verb forms and agreement occur in examples such as “People was greatly facilitate” and “advertising was no longer to pay attention”; the latter also lacks a clear grammatical subject for the action. Articles and sentence construction are problematic in “There is also a opportunity” and the fragment “Because it gives a lot of information.” Practise forming complete clauses, maintaining subject–verb agreement, and using past or present tense consistently. These recurring errors sometimes make the reader work to understand your meaning.
