IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays, we see advertisements everywere. Some people think ads are very power of source to buying things. Other people think we see too many ads so we just ignore them. In this essay, I will discuss both view and give my opinion.
One of the main reason is that, advertising is very successful way to buy things. Companies use clear ideas too attract us. They use famous actors, beautiful models, and family families to show their products. For example, If a famous actor advertises new mobile phone many fans buy mobile phone even if they really don,t need them. Also social media like Facebook and Instagram are the big source we see ads new things. Even a nw brands out in market we searched on mobile phone.
On the other side, some people say advertising is too common now. We see ads on TV, on roads, on YouTube, and on mobile apps all day. Because of this, we get bored and we ignore them. For instance, most people skip ads on YouTube after 5 seconds. Many people also use ad-blockers on their phones and computers. So they think ads have no effect anymore.
In my opinion, advertising is still very powerful. Even if we skip an ad, we still see the brand name or logo for a few seconds. We may not remember it, but our brain remembers it. Later, when we go to a shop, we choose the brand that looks familiar. For example, we will buy Coca-Cola instead of a new cola drink because we know the name. So ads work slowly, not directly.
To sum up, although there are too many ads today and people try to ignore them, I think advertising still controls what we buy.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and give a consistent opinion: the two main perspectives are explained in separate paragraphs, and your position that advertising remains powerful is clear in the introduction, opinion paragraph, and conclusion. The examples of celebrity endorsements, skipped YouTube ads, and familiar brands are relevant. This meets the task well, while some ideas are less fully developed than others. For instance, the claim that “our brain remembers” a logo is asserted rather than explained, and the point about social media is difficult to follow. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how repeated exposure influences purchasing and develop the opposing view beyond listing ways people avoid ads.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, your own opinion, and a conclusion. Signposts such as “On the other side,” “In my opinion,” and “To sum up” make the progression easy to follow. The examples generally appear in the relevant paragraphs. However, some connections are mechanical, and a few references or transitions are unclear. In “Even a nw brands out in market we searched on mobile phone,” the relationship to the preceding point is hard to understand, interrupting the flow. Use linking phrases to show cause and effect more precisely, and ensure each sentence clearly connects to the paragraph’s main idea. This would make the organisation feel more consistently controlled.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “advertisements,” “ad-blockers,” “brand name,” and “familiar.” Some phrases also show an attempt to express more specific ideas, such as “ads work slowly, not directly.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unnatural: “power of source to buying things,” “clear ideas too attract us,” and “the big source” make parts of the argument harder to understand. Spelling errors such as “everywere” and “nw” also reduce accuracy. Build a bank of natural advertising collocations, for example “persuade consumers to buy” and “influence purchasing decisions,” and check spelling and word forms during revision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, including a conditional example (“If a famous actor advertises…”) and a concession beginning “Even if we skip an ad.” Most sentences communicate their basic meaning, but some grammatical errors remain and occasionally make relationships unclear. Examples include “One of the main reason is that, advertising is…” and “many fans buy mobile phone,” where agreement, article use, and sentence punctuation need attention. The sentence beginning “Even a nw brands…” also lacks a clear grammatical structure. Practise checking singular and plural forms, articles, and complete clause patterns, especially in longer sentences. More accurate control of these forms would make your ideas easier to follow.
