IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There is a divide opinion about advertising. Some people consider advertising a successful way to persuade idividuals to shop anything and, on the other hand, some people desagreement with this perspective. I agree with the first group because there are two main practices used to convince people: visual marketing and social media influence.
Marketing involves many elements, but it begins visually. The first step to persuade people to buy is with a remarakble advertisement. Striking colors with significant letters, pictures and very attractive prices is the effective way to capture visual attention. For this reason, when we are walking on the street or we are going to the mall, we could saw posters or banners to persudade out attention. This strategy is also in modern spaces like social media. Apps like Instagram and Facebook involves advertising between people posts. People whom scrolling are mainly constumers of online marketing every day.
On the other hand, people that consider advertising insuccessful have other reasons to denies the statement. They consider elements like visual saturation, like New York famous street, and the impossibility to mantaint a longer concentration. Overexposition to many advertising can generate a lack of attention in people. But, in my point of viewm that is the way for an unaware costumer of advertising.
Marketing tactics is favorable because it has tools. Visual marketing is the first step but social media is the most common today. People that claim the first statement has more reasons to belief in the persuading advertisment with the every day experience.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You discuss both views and state a clear preference for the view that advertising persuades people, supported by examples of visual marketing and social media. The references to striking colours, prices, posters, and ads between social-media posts are relevant. However, the opposing view is only briefly explained through saturation and reduced concentration, and your response does not fully clarify why these factors make people ignore advertising. Your own position is also asserted more than demonstrated: the final claim that everyday experience supports persuasive advertising needs a specific example or explanation. Develop both sides more evenly and show how each example supports the argument to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph supporting advertising’s persuasive power, a paragraph presenting the opposing view, and a conclusion. Linking phrases such as “On the other hand” help signal the change in viewpoint. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and several connections feel mechanical or imprecise. For example, “But, in my point of viewm that is the way for an unaware costumer” does not clearly connect the saturation argument to your opinion. The conclusion repeats the earlier points rather than drawing them together. Use clearer topic sentences, explain the relationship between each example and claim, and make references such as “the first statement” explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You attempt topic-specific vocabulary, including “visual marketing,” “social media influence,” “visual saturation,” and “concentration,” which helps communicate the subject. There is also some variety in describing advertising formats, such as “posters or banners.” However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause: “remarakble,” “persudade,” “insuccessful,” and “Overexposition” are examples. Some combinations are also unnatural, including “shop anything” and “persuade out attention.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and check spelling carefully. Replacing vague or awkward expressions with precise phrases will make your argument easier to follow and more convincing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You use both simple statements and attempts at longer structures, including the contrast in “Some people consider … and, on the other hand…” and the reason introduced by “because.” However, complex sentences are often not controlled accurately, and errors in agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction recur. For example, “Apps like Instagram and Facebook involves” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “we could saw” uses an incorrect verb form. “People whom scrolling” is also structurally incomplete. These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to understand. Practise building accurate clauses with correct verb forms and agreement, then proofread each sentence for a clear subject and finite verb.
