IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's modern world advertising plays an insurmountable role in people's lives. Some community member beleive that advertising is extremely important in pursuading us to purchase things while some other members of society argue that advertising is no longer need. In my opinion, advertising remains an effective marketing tool.

On the one hand, advertising plays a crucial role in influencing people's purchasing decisions. Many conponies and brands make attractive advertisemnt to introduce their products and highlights their benfits. In addition many social media influencers and contant creators advertise some products which influence their followers to buy those things. For instance, there is any famous actor who give advertisemnt of any mobile phone and clothing brand, many people become interested in buying those products. Thus, advertising is very favourable to make hype of any product.

On other hand, some people beleive that advertisemnt have become so widespread that people started to ignoring them. Nowadays, many people started across advertisement on television on website, social media platforms and even on streets. Because sometimes people feel bored after seeing the same advertisement repeatdly. Moreover, at current time, everyone has start to give preference to online reviews of the product instead of buying them blindly after seeing the one attractive advertisement.

In conclusion, some people beleive that advertisemnt is very crucial in pursuading us to purchase thing while other argue that advertisement is no longer needed. In my opinion, attractive advertisement remains very effective marketing tools and also very helpful for the people who don't know about some products.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address both views and state a clear opinion that advertising remains effective. The first body paragraph explains how brands and influencers introduce products and influence followers, while the second gives reasons people may ignore repeated adverts and rely on online reviews. These are relevant points, but some are not fully developed: the example about an actor promoting a phone or clothing brand is unclear, and the claim that advertising is “very favourable to make hype” is not explained. Your conclusion repeats your position, though it could more directly weigh the two views. Develop each main point with a clearer explanation or a specific, well-connected example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The contrast markers “On the one hand” and “On other hand” help readers follow the discussion, and ideas generally progress within each paragraph. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and signposting. However, links can feel mechanical, and some references are unclear—for example, “those things” and “those products” do not identify a precise item, while the actor example is difficult to follow. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make links between claims and examples explicit to strengthen progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “purchasing decisions,” “social media influencers,” “online reviews,” and “widespread,” so the reader can understand the main discussion. There are also attempts at more expressive language, such as “plays a crucial role” and “attractive advertisement.” However, spelling errors are noticeable, including “beleive,” “pursuading,” “conponies,” and “repeatdly,” and several word combinations are inaccurate or unnatural: “make hype of any product” and “advertising is no longer need.” These issues limit precision and sometimes make the phrasing awkward, even though the overall meaning remains accessible. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for advertising and consumer behaviour.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “products which influence their followers” and a reason clause beginning “Because sometimes people feel bored.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “some community member believe” needs plural agreement, “advertisement have become” needs a singular/plural match, and “people started to ignoring” uses an incorrect verb pattern. The sentence beginning “there is any famous actor who give advertisement” also has problems with article choice, agreement, and sentence construction. Aim for accurate subject–verb agreement and verb patterns, and revise incomplete or awkwardly formed sentences while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
