IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that advertising is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things. Other people think that advertising is so common that we no longer pay attention to it. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Some people believe that advertisement is extremely successful at persuading us to buy things, while some people think that it is so common that they no longer pay attention to it. From my perspective, advertising persuade people to buy different things.
To begin with, advertising help people to know about a product or others. Without any advertisement, it is difficult for people to have information about any item. For instance, imagine a company invents a new smartphone that has a battery lasting for one week. If they do not make an ad, customers will keep buying old phones because they simply do not know the new one is available. Therefore, ads are not just about tricking people; they are necessary tool to contact buyers with the right product.
Moreover, many companies have found new and clever ways to make ads highly successful. Instead of showing the same thing again, they use technology to see what you like online. For instance, if you look up shoes on Google, a shoe ad will immediately start popping up on your Instagram or other features. These ads match your exact interest at the right time. As a result, by using emotions, they make people to buy there item.
On the other hand, many people have stopped paying attention to marketing, there is simply too much. In our everyday life, we see hundreds of ads on television, social media and billboards. Because our brain cannot process all this, we just block it. For example, when a commercial break starts on TV or an ad pops up on a video, most people do not watch it. Instead, they immediately check their mobile phones or mute the sound until their video starts again. When ads interrupt us too much, we start ignoring them.
In conclusion, although we often ignore common ads on TV or social media because we see them too much, advertising is still highly successful. It remains essential for introducing new items and using smart technology to persuade us to spend money.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address both views and state your position clearly: advertising can persuade people, although many ignore it because it is everywhere. The examples about a new smartphone and targeted shoe adverts support the persuasive side, while the TV and online interruptions illustrate the opposing view. This is relevant and gives the discussion a clear direction. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the persuasive case receives two paragraphs, whereas the view that people ignore advertising is mainly supported by one example. Some claims, such as ads using emotions to make people buy, would benefit from a clearer explanation of how this influence works. The response also includes nine words copied from the task prompt, which are excluded from the count. Develop the less-supported view and qualify broad claims to strengthen the discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, discussion of advertising’s persuasive effects, a contrasting paragraph, and a conclusion that restates your position. Paragraphs generally have a central focus, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Moreover,” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the argument. This gives the essay coherent progression. At times, however, the links feel mechanical, and some connections between sentences could be more precise. For example, “As a result” introduces the claim about emotional persuasion without clearly showing how it follows from targeted adverts. The sentence beginning “On the other hand” also joins two complete ideas with a comma. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each example and its point explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough vocabulary to discuss advertising and provide relevant examples, including “persuading,” “commercial break,” “interrupt,” and “targeted” ideas such as ads matching a person’s interests. There are also attempts at more specific phrasing, such as “highly successful” and “smart technology.” However, the range and precision are uneven, with repeated use of general words such as “ads,” “things,” and “people.” Some word choices or forms are inaccurate: “advertisement” is used where the plural or uncountable “advertising” is needed, and “other features” is unclear in the social-media example. “Contact buyers with the right product” is also an unnatural collocation. Build a more precise range of terms for advertising methods and consumer responses, and check word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If they do not make an ad, customers will keep buying old phones” and a subordinate clause beginning “Because our brain cannot process all this.” These structures help explain causes and consequences, and the main ideas remain understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. Subject–verb agreement is incorrect in “advertising help” and “advertising persuade”; the infinitive pattern is faulty in “make people to buy”; and the article is missing in “they are necessary tool.” The sentence “On the other hand, many people have stopped paying attention to marketing, there is simply too much” also needs a full stop, semicolon, or conjunction to connect its clauses correctly. Review agreement, articles, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries while retaining your varied structures.
