IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie charts illustrate information about the jobs of Anthropology graduate students, while the table chart depicts wages of graduates after five years in working.
Overall, more than half of the students got a full-time job, while the least number of them did part-time work with studying after graduation. Moreover, government jobs provided the highest salaries to half of the workers, whereas private companies gave maximum salaries to just one-third population.
After graduation, more than half of the students got a full-time working job. Meanwhile, only 5% of students continued their job along with part-time study. Full-time post-graduation studying students and the students whose data is not known have a similar value of 8% for each. Unemployed students represent 12% proportion, and part-time working ones account for 15%.
Furthermore, salaries of Anthropology graduates in freelance consultancy increase from $25,000–49,999 of 5% to threefold at $50,000–74,999, similar to the government sector. Although the government sector increases the salary of graduates from 30% in the $75,000–99,999 range to 50% for salaries above $100,000, freelance consultants remain at the same number of graduates for salaries of $75,000–99,999 and above $100,000. Private companies have 10% of workers earning $25,000–49,999, rising to 35% for $50,000–74,999 and then 30% for salaries above $100,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie charts and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the charts. However, the description of the table data is slightly confusing in places. For example, stating that freelance consultancy salaries 'increase from $25,000–49,999 of 5% to threefold at $50,000–74,999' is a bit difficult to follow. To reach a higher band, ensure that comparisons between categories are stated more clearly and precisely, avoiding overly complex mathematical descriptions that may obscure the actual data trends.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Meanwhile', and 'Furthermore' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing in the final paragraph is occasionally unclear. For instance, the phrase 'similar to the government sector' in the context of salary increases could be more explicitly linked to the specific data points to improve flow. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to a coherent progression of information.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'freelance consultancy', 'proportion', and 'undergraduate degree'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'table chart' (which is redundant) and 'maximum salaries to just one-third population' (which is slightly unnatural). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the phrasing occasionally lacks the precision required for a higher band. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding redundant descriptors will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear, and errors in grammar and punctuation are infrequent and do not impede communication. There are some minor issues, such as 'Full-time post-graduation studying students' which is slightly clunky, and 'the least number of them did part-time work with studying' which could be phrased more naturally. Overall, your control of grammar is good, and you maintain a consistent level of accuracy throughout the response.
