Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart depicts what Anthropology graduates from one university did after graduating from their undergraduate degree course. The table illustrates the salaries of the anthropologists in work after a period of five years.

Overall, half of the Anthropology graduates became full-time workers, while those who combined part-time work and postgraduate study recorded the least. The highest earners after the given period are those in the government sector, which was also joint-least earners with those who became freelance consultants.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified and reported the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data. However, there are some inaccuracies in your data interpretation. For instance, you stated that 5% of freelance consultants and government workers earned $25,000–$50,000, but the table actually shows 5% for freelance consultants and 10% for government workers in that bracket. Additionally, your description of the salary data is slightly confusing, particularly the phrase 'half a thousand', which is unclear. To reach a higher band, ensure that data extraction is precise and that comparisons are clearly linked to the specific categories provided in the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on the two distinct data sets. You use cohesive devices such as 'In terms of' and 'Overall' to guide the reader through the information. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different aspects of the task. However, some transitions are slightly repetitive, and the connection between sentences in the final paragraph could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, though the flow of information in the final paragraph is slightly hindered by the minor inaccuracies in data reporting.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'depicts', 'illustrates', and 'accounted for'. There are some instances of awkward phrasing, such as 'the two category also similarly recorded' and the confusing 'half a thousand' (which likely meant $50,000). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is occasionally lacking, which affects the clarity of your report. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations when describing statistical data and ensure that numerical values are expressed in standard, unambiguous formats.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear, and your meaning is generally easy to follow. There are some minor grammatical errors, such as 'The two category' (should be 'The two categories') and 'after five years work' (should be 'after five years of work'). These errors are non-systematic and do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate a wider variety of complex structures, such as relative clauses or passive voice, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already established.
