Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to cover the data, but it fails to provide a clear overview or identify the most significant trends. The description of the data is disorganized and repetitive, focusing on listing percentages rather than synthesizing the information. For instance, the attempt to describe salary brackets is confusing and lacks a clear comparative structure. The introduction is also inaccurate, as it misidentifies the chart content (the pie chart shows employment status, not degree courses). The response lacks a clear summary of the main features, which is a requirement for Band 6 and above. The conclusion is vague and does not effectively summarize the key findings.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks logical paragraphing, consisting of one long, dense block of text. This makes it difficult for the reader to follow the progression of ideas. While there are some cohesive devices used, such as 'Following that' and 'At last', they are used mechanically and do not always create a smooth flow between sentences. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall structure is disjointed. To improve, the student should organize the response into clear paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs focusing on distinct features of the data.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and word-choice errors, such as 'most expensive package salary' and 'anthropologicalpology'. The student relies heavily on simple descriptors and struggles to use precise terminology to describe statistical data. While the meaning is generally conveyed, the lack of variety and the presence of spelling errors prevent the response from reaching a higher band. Using more academic vocabulary related to trends and data comparison would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the Pie chart... compare') and awkward sentence construction ('the first is $25000-49,999 who have 5% of freelance consultants'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of commas and capitalization. While the student attempts to use complex structures, they are often faulty. Improving control over basic sentence patterns and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would help raise the score in this criterion.
