IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
While the pie chart illustrates the proportion of what Anthropology students from a particular university did after their graduation, the table compares their salaries after 5 years of employment.
Overall, more than half of the graduates engaged in full-time employment, while a small portion of them started postgraduate study along with a part-time work. Anthropologists working in the government sectors and as freelancing consultants earned higher salaries after 5 years compared to those who worked in private companies.
Most of the graduates (52%) started full-time work, which is the highest proportion on the chart, followed by part-time employment at 15%, although 12% of them remained unemployed. 8% of the graduates began their postgraduate degree, while 5% of them took up part-time jobs additionally. However, nobody knows about the destination of the remaining 8% of the graduates.
Regarding the salaries after five years, 50% of the anthropologists working in government sectors earned more than $100,000, while 30% earned around $75,000-99,999. Similarly, 40% of the freelancing consultants earned more than $100,000 and $75,000-99,999 each. By contrast, private companies provided lower salaries with 35% accounting for $50,000-75,000 and only 30% earned more than $100,000 in five years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully identified the main features of both the pie chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with relevant data from the charts. However, there is a minor inaccuracy in your interpretation: you mention 'nobody knows about the destination of the remaining 8% of the graduates', whereas the chart labels this category as 'unknown'. Additionally, ensure that your comparisons are always precise; for instance, when discussing the freelancing consultants, you state they earned '$100,000 and $75,000-99,999 each', which is slightly ambiguous. Overall, you have covered all parts of the task well.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that separate the two data sets effectively. You use cohesive devices such as 'while', 'similarly', and 'by contrast' to link ideas. The progression of information is smooth and easy to follow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to group related information. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'the remaining 8%' is clear, but ensure that transitions between the two distinct data sets (chart vs. table) remain seamless throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information clearly. Phrases like 'engaged in full-time employment', 'government sectors', and 'freelancing consultants' are appropriate for the context. There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'nobody knows about the destination', which is slightly informal for an academic report. Using more precise academic terminology would enhance the quality of your writing. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate and allows for a clear presentation of the data without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your control of grammar is generally good. There are occasional minor slips, such as 'started postgraduate study along with a part-time work' (the article 'a' is unnecessary before 'work' in this context). Punctuation is generally accurate, and your use of complex structures, such as 'while 50% of the anthropologists... earned more than...', shows good control. The errors present do not impede communication and are infrequent.
