Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart gives information about the carrier goals of Anthropology graduates of a particular university and the table illustrates the salaries of these graduates after five years of working.

Overall, a cursory glance at the pie chart indicates that maximum number of graduates persued full-time work as their carrier compared to the other five categories. On the other hand, from the table it is clear that almost half of the graduates with government jobs earned more than $100,000 after five years of working period.

From the pie chart it is clear that almost 52% graduates chose full-time work as a carrier. The proportion of students with full-time postgrad and unknown workplace were same at 8%. In contrast, 15% students were working as part-time workers, while only 5% students chose part-time work along with postgrad study.

Equal percentages of graduates were earning $25,000-49,999 at only 5% for both freelance consultants and government sector. Higher proportion (50%) of government job holders were paid above $100,000 after fiver years of working than the other two sectors, private companies at 30% and freelance consultants at 40%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses both the pie chart and the table. You have identified the main features, such as the dominance of full-time work and the salary distribution in the government sector. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the categories. For instance, while you mention the 50% figure for government jobs, you could have more explicitly contrasted this with the lower percentages in private companies and freelance work to highlight the disparity. The overview is clear and provides a good summary of the data, which is essential for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two data sources. Cohesive devices such as 'On the other hand', 'In contrast', and 'From the pie chart' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow between sentences could be smoother; some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To reach a higher band, ensure that the progression of ideas within paragraphs is more fluid, perhaps by using more varied linking phrases to connect the data points rather than just listing them.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to describe the data, such as 'proportion', 'categories', and 'sectors'. However, there are recurring spelling errors, most notably 'carrier' instead of 'career' and 'persued' instead of 'pursued'. These errors are noticeable and detract from the professional tone required for an Academic Task 1 response. While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, improving precision and ensuring correct spelling of common academic terms would significantly enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'almost 52% graduates' (missing 'of'), 'were same' (missing 'the'), and 'after fiver years' (typo). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band score. To improve, focus on article usage (the/a) and subject-verb agreement. Ensure you proofread carefully to catch minor slips like 'fiver' instead of 'five', which can affect the overall impression of your control over the language.
