IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
There is one chart and and one table, which represents two different topics. The chart illustrates what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course, and the table demonstrates the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.
The pie chart displays different patterns and colours, each representing different destinations of anthropology graduates from one university, while the table shows the salaries of these students after working for 5 years.
The pie chart displays the largest segment of graduates that is 52%, are working full-time while the least proportion of them that is 5% are working part-time or pursuing postgrad study. The remaining graduates are contributing to other sectors like part-time work 15%, full-time postgrad study 8%, 12% are unemployed and remaining 8% are not known.
Then the table explains the salaries of graduates, where most of them are earning $100,000+ by working as freelancer consultants 40%, government sector 50% or private companies 30%. The least percentage of graduates are earning $25,000-$49,999.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of both the chart and the table. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with data. However, the response lacks a cohesive comparison between the two datasets. For instance, you list the percentages for the pie chart but do not synthesize the information to highlight trends or relationships. Additionally, there are some inaccuracies in data reporting; for example, you state that 5% are working part-time or pursuing postgrad study, but the chart shows these as separate categories (15% and 8% respectively). More careful attention to detail and a stronger attempt to compare the data would elevate your score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction and separate paragraphs for the chart and the table. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. You rely heavily on 'The pie chart displays' and 'the table shows' to begin your sentences. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and transition phrases to connect your ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is present, but the transition between the description of the chart and the table could be smoother to create a more integrated report.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'segment', 'proportion', and 'contributing to'. However, the vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are also minor issues with word choice, such as 'demonstrates the salaries', where 'outlines' or 'details' would be more precise. To reach a higher band, aim to incorporate more sophisticated collocations and avoid repeating the same sentence structures and verbs throughout the response. Your spelling is accurate, which is a positive aspect of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'There is one chart and and one table, which represents two different topics' (subject-verb agreement: 'represent'). Another error is 'the largest segment of graduates that is 52%, are working' (punctuation and structure). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and ensuring that your relative clauses are punctuated correctly.
