IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

The pie chart illustrates the destinations of Anthropology graduates from one university after completing their undergraduate degree, while the table shows the salaries of graduates in three types of employment after five years of work.

Overall, full-time work was by far the most common destination, accounting for 52% of graduates, while the smallest proportion combined part-time work with postgraduate study. After five years, graduates working in the government sector were more likely to earn the highest salaries, whereas freelance consultants had the highest proportion in the $75,000–$99,999 bracket.

In terms of destinations, 52% of graduates entered full-time employment, which was more than half of the total. Part-time work accounted for 15%, while 12% of graduates were unemployed. In addition, 8% continued with full-time postgraduate study and the same proportion had an unknown destination. Finally, only 5% combined part-time work with postgraduate study.

Turning to salaries, among freelance consultants, 5% earned between $25,000 and $49,999, while 15% earned $50,000–$74,999. The remaining two groups were equally distributed, with 40% earning between $75,000 and $99,999 and another 40% earning $100,000 or more. In the government sector, the figures were 5%, 15%, 30% and 50% respectively across the four salary ranges. Finally, among graduates working for private companies, 10% earned $25,000–$49,999, 35% earned $50,000–$74,999, 25% earned $75,000–$99,999, and 30% earned $100,000 or more.
