IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart illustrates the pathway that Anthropology graduates chose after completing their undergraduate degree, while the accompanying table indicates the salaries of the graduates after spending 5 years in their work, in different sectors of employment.
Overall, the largest proportion of graduates were able to secure a full time work after studies, while the smallest proportion went for part time work with postgrad study. In terms of earnings, government sector and freelance consultants were distributed similarly across a range of salaries, meanwhile the private sector employees show a different salary pattern.
Full-time work professionals accounted for the majority of the share of 52%, followed by those who worked part time at around 15%. By contrast, only 12% of graduates were unemployed, while 8% went for Full-time postgrad study and part-time work with postgrad study was done by just 5% of graduates. However, there was no data about 8% of the graduates.
Moving forward to five years after graduation, government sector employees were most heavily represented by the highest earning bracket of 50% earning $100,000+ salary. By comparision, freelance consultants had a similar proportion in the two highest earning brackets with 40% earning between $75,000-$90,000 and same percentage earning more than $100,000, while private sector employees had a much majority of workers earning between $50,000 to $74,999.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the pie chart and the table. An adequate overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the dominant post-graduation outcome and general salary distribution patterns. Key features are selected and compared appropriately, such as noting that 52% entered full-time work and contrasting the government sector's high earnings with private company salaries. While the ideas are well-extended and supported by figures, there is a minor error in citing the freelance consultant salary bracket as $75,000-$90,000 instead of the visual data's $75,000–99,999. To reach a higher band, the response would need to maintain complete accuracy in data transcription and provide a more fully developed comparison across all sectors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
There is a clear logical organization and progression throughout the response. Information is grouped sensibly, moving from the destination of graduates to their salaries after five years, and paragraphs have distinct focuses. Cohesive devices are used flexibly, including transition phrases like 'In terms of earnings', 'By contrast', and 'Moving forward'. Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately. To achieve an even higher level, the writer could ensure that cohesive links feel entirely natural rather than slightly formulaic, and refine the logical transitions between the macro-level destination data and the micro-level salary table.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for some precision and flexibility with phrases like 'largest proportion', 'heavily represented', and 'earning bracket'. Less common vocabulary items are attempted with some awareness of style, such as 'destination of graduates' and 'sector employees'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing 'secure a full time work' instead of 'secure full-time work', and stating 'had a much majority of workers' instead of 'the vast majority'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and these minor slips do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating frequent error-free sentences and a solid command of grammar and punctuation. Structures such as 'while the accompanying table indicates...' and 'accounted for the majority of the share of 52%, followed by those who...' show good control. However, a few persistent errors remain, such as article usage and prepositional choices, seen in 'secure a full time work' (article omission/uncountable noun misuse) and 'By comparision' (minor spelling slip treated as a mechanical constraint). Punctuation is generally sound, supporting the overall readability of the text.
