Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of both the pie chart and the table, and includes appropriate comparisons between categories. An overview is provided right at the beginning, noting key extremes such as the highest and lowest proportions in the chart. However, certain parts of the response are more fully developed than others; for instance, the analysis of the table contains minor inaccuracies in reading the data, such as stating that 52% of workers in the government sector received over 100,000 dollars, whereas the actual figure is 50%. This minor flaw keeps the task response from reaching a higher level, while still demonstrating a clear grasp of the overall visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory summary to the body paragraphs detailing the pie chart and the table respectively. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct visual sources. Cohesive devices are employed to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In contrast', and 'However', although some referencing is slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Pronoun use and referencing are generally clear, enabling the reader to follow the flow of information smoothly, but greater flexibility in transitions would elevate the organizational quality further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'proportion', 'consultants', and 'unemployed'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that slightly impede precision, including 'Anthropolgy' instead of Anthropology, 'heigher' instead of higher, 'minimium' instead of minimum, 'employeers' instead of employees or employers, and 'cosultants' instead of consultants. Despite these slips, the vocabulary remains functional and sufficient to communicate the main data points effectively, fitting the profile of this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('in government sector' instead of 'in the government sector'), awkward prepositional phrasing ('Regarding to the table' instead of 'Regarding the table' or 'With regard to the table'), and tense inconsistencies. Nevertheless, these errors rarely impede communication, and the majority of sentences are understandable, maintaining a satisfactory level of grammatical control.
