Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the main parts of the task by providing an overview and summarizing data from both the pie chart and the table. However, some aspects of the information are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the overview contains a confusing reference to private companies earning salaries between 50,000 and 74,999, which conflates employment sectors with salary ranges shown in the table. Furthermore, the description of data tends to list figures mechanically rather than fully integrating meaningful comparisons across all categories. To move to a higher band, the response needs to select and contrast key features more accurately and clearly outline the overall trends without mixing up the visual data categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates an overall coherent arrangement, dividing the text into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the pie chart and the table. Information is logically sequenced to some extent, with clear transition markers like 'Turning to the salary table'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in awkward transitional phrases such as 'Rgarding, in the pie chart' and 'At the last'. Paragraphing is used, but internal flow within paragraphs could be improved to ensure smoother progression. To achieve a higher band, the writer should employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences is precise and unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is minimally adequate for the task, providing basic terms related to charts and statistics such as 'percentage', 'graduates', and 'salaries'. However, the range is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation that occasionally impede communication. Examples include 'compnies' instead of companies, 'goverment' instead of government, 'postgard' instead of postgraduate, and awkward phrasing like 'the same coast' instead of 'the same cost' or proportion. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are frequently inaccurate. To improve lexical resource, the student needs to build a more flexible and precise vocabulary while minimizing spelling and word choice errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple clauses and repetitive patterns. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as in the opening sentence where clauses are awkwardly linked with 'while'. There are frequent errors in grammar, including missing articles ('in 100,000 plus'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the government sector earn'), and preposition errors ('at the same percentage 8%'). While these errors do not completely obscure the intended meaning, they occur frequently and cause some difficulty for the reader. To reach a higher band, the student must incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures with greater accuracy and better control over basic sentence mechanics.
