IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The pie chart illustrates kinds of work done by Anthropology graduates of undergraduate degree course. The table provides information about renumeration of the graduates with five years of experience.

Overall, the majority of the graduates work on a full-time basis. 50% of the graduates working in the government sector earn at least $100,000 anually, while in private companies the percentage equals 30.

Data show that majority of the graduates work on a full-time basis. According to the graph 15% of the graduates work part time, with another 5% combaining part-time job and postgraduate studies. 8% of undergraduate students decided to continue studies and became full-time postgraduate students. 12% of the former anthropology students are now unemployed and the destination of 8% is unknown.

In terms of salaries of anthropology students, data show that regardless of the type of the employment, people with salaries below $50,000 represent the smallest proportion in each category. The most common salaries' categories for freelance consultants are $75,000-99,999 and $100,000+ with both recording the same figure of 40%. Only 15% of people working in the government sector earn between $50,000 and $74,999, with 30% having renumeration between $75,000 and $99,999 and 40% $100,000+. In private sector 35% earn between 0,000 and $74,999, 25% $75,000-99,999 and 30% $100,000+.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both visuals and provide a clear overview, identifying full-time work as the main graduate destination and highlighting the high-earning government and private-sector groups. Most figures are reported accurately, including the destination percentages and the salary distributions for freelance consultants. However, there is a factual inconsistency: the overview says 50% of government employees earn at least $100,000, but the later paragraph says 40%; the table gives 50%. The statement that salaries below $50,000 are the smallest proportion in every category is accurate, though the comparison could be developed further by noting that private-company employees are more concentrated in the $50,000–74,999 band. Overall, the key features are selected and supported, with some scope for more precise comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on graduate destinations and one on salaries. This makes the two visuals easy to follow, and phrases such as “In terms of salaries” signal the shift effectively. However, cohesion is sometimes repetitive or mechanical: the point that most graduates work full time appears in both the overview and the next paragraph, while “data show” is used more than once. Some links between salary details could be clearer, and the final paragraph moves through categories largely as a list. Grouping the salary comparisons around the highest and lowest bands, and using more varied referencing, would create smoother progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “full-time basis,” “postgraduate studies,” “proportion,” and “employment.” These choices generally communicate the data clearly, and you attempt more formal terms such as “remuneration.” Some word-choice, collocation and spelling errors prevent consistently precise control: “renumeration” is misspelled, “kinds of work done” is less natural for describing destinations, and “salaries’ categories” is awkward. “Undergraduate students” also does not accurately describe graduates who have completed their course. Aim for standard chart-reporting expressions and check spelling, especially in repeated key terms, to make the vocabulary more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “while in private companies the percentage equals 30” and the clause beginning “with another 5% combining…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical choices are inaccurate or awkward. For example, “the majority of the graduates work” would be more naturally expressed with a singular verb in this construction, and “the destination of 8% is unknown” has an unclear subject reference. The sentence about government salaries also needs a consistent figure and clearer parallel structure. Continue practising article use, agreement and sentence construction, while keeping the generally clear meaning of your comparisons.
