IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The pie chart shows the destination of anthropology graduates from one university. On the other hand, the table shows the salaries of anthropology graduates after five years' work within three different types of employment.

Overall, more than half the number of anthropology graduates ended up with full time work, while the least number of graduates ended up with part time work along with postgrad study. Salary range of $75,000-99,999 together with $1,00,000+ were the most popular ranges after 5 years' work for freelance consultants. While salary range of $50,000 - 74,999 was the most popular within private companies, maximum number of graduates in government sector had salary above $1,00,000 after 5 years.

52 % of anthropology graduates ended up with full time work after graduation, while only 5 percent of graduates ended up doing part time work along with postgrad study. 12 % of graduates remained unemployed, while 15 % of graduates ended up with part time work.

Salary range of $25,000 - 49,999 was the least popular within all three types of employment. 80 percent of graduates had their salary above $75,000 within government sector as well as freelance consultancy, while 35 % of graduates had the salary range of $50,000-74,999 making it the most popular within private companies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both visuals and provide a clear overview, identifying full-time work as the largest destination and part-time work combined with postgraduate study as the smallest. The main salary comparisons are also generally accurate: the $50,000–74,999 band is the largest category in private companies, and salaries above $75,000 account for 80% in both government and freelance work. However, the overview says the two upper salary bands were the most popular for freelance consultants without clarifying that they are tied, and the final paragraph omits the 8% in full-time postgraduate study and the 8% whose destination is not known. The response selects relevant features and supports them with figures, but a more complete account of the destination categories and sharper comparisons would strengthen it.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for graduate destinations and salaries. This makes the two visuals easy to follow, and comparisons such as the 52% in full-time work versus 5% combining part-time work and postgraduate study are placed logically. The linking phrases “Overall” and “while” help signal the main contrasts. However, “On the other hand” suggests a contrast between the chart and table when they simply present different information, and repeated openings such as “Salary range” make the progression somewhat mechanical. The salary paragraph also moves from a general statement to selected figures without a fully systematic comparison. More varied transitions and clearer grouping of related salary bands would make cohesion more flexible.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “destination,” “salary range,” “unemployed,” and “employment,” and the meaning remains clear throughout. There is some useful variation in describing outcomes, such as “ended up with” and “remained unemployed.” However, several phrases are repetitive or imprecise for formal data reporting: “ended up with” appears repeatedly, and “most popular” is less suitable for salary brackets than “largest proportion” or “most common salary band.” “Maximum number of graduates” also does not accurately describe a percentage distribution, while “within freelance consultancy” is an awkward collocation. More precise reporting language and a wider range of natural comparison phrases would improve flexibility and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are controlled accurately, including “12% of graduates remained unemployed, while 15% of graduates ended up with part-time work.” The overview also uses a subordinate clause effectively to compare salary patterns. A few grammatical and punctuation issues remain. In “more than half the number of anthropology graduates,” the noun phrase is awkwardly constructed; “more than half of the graduates” is clearer. The sentence beginning “While salary range…” is a fragment because it lacks a main clause. There is also inconsistent hyphenation in “full time” and “part time,” and the salary figures would be clearer with consistent formatting. These are limited issues, but correcting them would make the otherwise clear structures more consistently accurate.
