IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The information about the future career of Anthropology graduates from one university after completing their undergraduate degree course after five years is depicted by pie chart and a data table.

Overall, the destination of graduated students in Anthropology was seen in the range of 5% to 15% only, except full-time workers.

It is vividly seen that graduates who opted for full-time work were not only just over 50% but also the maximum area of employement. The range of part-time workers and unemployed graduate observed to be quite similar, at 12% and 15%, respectively. Probing ahead, full-time postgrad studying students and unknown students were noticed exactly same, both at 8%.

Moving to the rest of the information, salaries of Anthropology scholars after 5 years' work was highest in government sector with nearly 50% students, at more than $100,000. Conversely, private companies had fewer packages for Anthropology grads, in the range of 10% to 35% only. Lastly, freelance consultants reported 40% students employment in the salary range of $75000 to $100,000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You cover both the graduate destinations and the salary table, and correctly identify full-time work as the largest destination (52%) and government employment as having the highest share in the top salary band (50%). However, the overview is not accurate: saying destinations were generally “in the range of 5% to 15%” overlooks the 52% figure, and the comparison of part-time work and unemployment reverses their values: these are 15% and 12%, respectively. The salary discussion also gives only a few selected details and describes private-company salaries broadly rather than highlighting that the $50,000–$74,999 band is their largest at 35%. A clearer overview and more precise, balanced comparisons would make the key features more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, a general statement, and separate paragraphs for destinations and salaries. This makes the two visual elements easy to follow, and transitions such as “Moving to the rest of the information” signal a change of focus. However, some linking phrases feel mechanical or do not clarify the relationship between ideas, including “Probing ahead” and “Lastly.” The overview also sits between the introduction and details but does not effectively summarise the main patterns. Within the salary paragraph, the comparisons could be ordered more systematically by employment type or salary band. More precise referencing and a logical sequence of comparisons would strengthen the progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “destination,” “full-time work,” “salary range,” and “government sector.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “Conversely” and “depicted.” However, several choices are unnatural or imprecise for describing chart data: “maximum area of employement,” “students employment,” and “packages” do not express the intended comparisons clearly. “Graduated students” and “Anthropology scholars” are also less natural than “graduates.” Spelling errors such as “employement” and inconsistent formatting of “$75000” reduce accuracy. Aim for standard chart language and natural collocations so that your vocabulary is both varied and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and most of the meaning remains understandable. For example, the sentence beginning “It is vividly seen that…” attempts a longer structure, while “Conversely, private companies…” provides a clear contrast. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, agreement, and sentence construction. In “the destination of graduated students… was seen,” the phrasing creates an awkward passive structure; “the destinations of graduates were…” would be more direct. “Salaries … was highest” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “both at 8%” would be clearer as “both accounted for 8%.” Continue varying sentence structures, while checking agreement and making each sentence’s subject and comparison explicit.
