IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the destination of Antrhopology graduates after completion of their undergraduate degree course. The table on the other hand compares the salaries of employed anthropolgists after 5 year of work experience in different sectors.
Overall major portion of graduates landed full time job after their study while only some of them managed to continue part time of with postgrad education. The salary comparison suggests that graduates working in government sector or those providing freelance services were generally able to make more money as compared to private sector employees.
Highest proportion of graduates (52%) landed a full time job followed by 15% of students who worked part time. Followed by these students are those who are still unemployed (12%). An equal proportion of students (8%) either continued full time postgrad study or did not provide any update about themselves since nothing is known about them. Only 5% of these Anthropology graduates continued both, part time work and postgrad study.
Half of the government sector employees having background of Anthropology are earning more than 100,000 dollars while 30% of them are earning a salary somewhere between 75000 and 99,999 dollars. An equal proportion of freelance consultants (40%) are earning more than 100,000 dollars and 75,000 to 99,999 dollars. 15% of freelane consultants and Governments sector emloyees have their salaries in same bracket of 50,000-74,999. Followed by these are those earning between the bracket of 25,000-49,999 dollars (5%).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both visuals and provide a relevant overview: full-time work is the largest destination, while government and freelance workers tend to have higher salaries than private-company employees. Most figures are reported accurately, including the 52% in full-time work and the 50% of government employees earning over $100,000. This gives the response a clear factual basis. However, the salary discussion is uneven: private-company salaries are not described, and the comparison between sectors could be more fully developed. The overview’s claim that only “some” graduates continued part-time or postgraduate study is also imprecise, since these are separate categories with different proportions. Include the missing sector and make the main salary contrasts explicit to give all parts of the task more balanced coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs for graduate destinations and salaries. This makes the two visuals easy to follow, and sequencing phrases such as “followed by” help present the figures in order. Some linking is mechanical or unclear, however. The sentence beginning “Followed by these students” repeats the previous ranking rather than creating a smooth transition, while “Followed by these are those earning…” makes the salary comparison difficult to track. The final paragraph also moves between sectors and salary bands without a clear comparative structure. Grouping the salary figures by income band or by sector, and using more precise references such as “the corresponding figure,” would strengthen progression and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “destination,” “proportion,” “postgrad study,” “salary comparison,” and “freelance consultants.” These choices communicate the main information, but several expressions are imprecise or unnatural for describing statistical data. “Landed full time job” is informal, “managed to continue” suggests an unsupported judgement, and “make more money” is less suitable than a neutral description of earnings. There are also spelling errors in “Antrhopology,” “anthropolgists,” “freelane,” and “emloyees,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for consistent, formal collocations such as “were employed,” “earned,” and “accounted for,” and proofread spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would make the comparisons clearer and more academic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including the contrast in “while only some of them…” and the relative clause “who worked part time.” Most sentences remain understandable, and the response communicates the key figures. Some grammatical errors persist, particularly with articles, number, and sentence construction. For example, “after 5 year of work experience” needs a plural noun, and “landed a full time job” requires an article and a hyphen in the compound modifier. The sentence “An equal proportion of students (8%) either continued… or did not provide…” is awkwardly structured because the two alternatives describe different groups. Use parallel constructions and check articles, plurals, and punctuation to improve accuracy while retaining your range of sentence forms.
