IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

Student answer (Band 4.5)

The pie chart illustrate the Anthropology graduates from one university right after finishing undergraduate degree course. furthermore, The table illustrate the pay of anthropologists in work after five years.

Full time work anthropologists are graduate largely, while part time work anthropologists are less only full time work and more then others. Not known are greater less then others.

Freelance consultants anthropologists are greater accounted by 40% followed by government sector at 50%, and private companies accounted by only 30% which is less then both of them.

In contrast, Government sector is highly paid, and the other hand freelance consultants just following then with 40% here is only the difference of 10% between both of them.

Private companies paid less then both of them because private companies pay only 30% and this is 20% less as compare to other employments. private companies are low in every figure of pay starting with 10% which is high as compare to others and 35% 2nd year which is also low and 3rd year this sector was clearly down with others. So overall, government sector was highly paid with others.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the two visuals and make a relevant broad comparison: government-sector employees have the largest share in the top salary band, while private-company employees have a smaller share. However, the response reports very little of the destination chart accurately: it does not give the 52% in full-time work or clearly compare the other destinations. Some salary details are also misinterpreted. For example, 40% is the freelance share earning $75,000–$99,999, not the overall proportion of freelance consultants, and the table does not show that private companies are low in every salary band: their 35% in the $50,000–$74,999 band is the highest of the three sectors. A clearer overview and accurate, selected figures are needed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is an attempt to organise the response by introducing the visuals, discussing employment destinations, and then comparing salaries. Linking phrases such as “In contrast” and “So overall” also show an effort to connect ideas. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the first comparison is vague (“less only full time work and more then others”), and the salary discussion repeats the same point about government and private companies without clearly identifying the salary bands. The paragraphing does not separate the chart and table information effectively, and some references, such as “here” and “this sector,” are unclear. Group the response into a brief overview and focused paragraphs, using explicit comparisons and references.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The response uses some task-related vocabulary, including “graduates,” “freelance consultants,” “government sector,” and “paid,” so the reader can recognise the general subject. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear, such as “are graduate largely,” “greater accounted,” and “2nd year” when describing salary bands. Repeated use of “less,” “high,” and “paid” also limits precision. Aim to use standard chart language and name the categories directly—for example, “the largest proportion,” “earned,” and “salary band.” More accurate vocabulary would help distinguish a percentage within a salary band from the overall share of graduates in a job type.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and longer comparisons, but control of sentence structure is inconsistent. Errors occur in basic agreement and verb forms, as in “The pie chart illustrate” and “private companies accounted by only 30%.” Articles and sentence boundaries are also unreliable: “furthermore, The table” incorrectly capitalises after a comma, while “private companies are low in every figure of pay starting with 10%” is difficult to parse. The response relies heavily on short, loosely connected clauses and does not show a controlled range of complex structures. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and complete comparison sentences, such as stating which proportion is higher in a named salary band.
