IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.

Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart and the table illustrate what Antrhropology graduates from one university did after completing their undergraduate degree and what salaries the graduates received after five years of working in this field, respectively.

Overall, the employement rate after graduation was high as the majority of the graduates were working after completing their course. If we discuss about the salaries of people working in this field for 5 years, except for the people working in the private sector, 80% of the graduates were receiving salaries of more than $75000.

After graduating from university, 13% of graduates continued their study. 52% of them opted for Full-time work while 20% of them were only working part-time. The employment rate among graduates was 12% and the fate of 8% of graduates is unknown.

For the people working in the government sector, 40% of people received salaries higher than $100,000. The proporation of people receiving $75,000-99,999 is also the same. Compared to others, people working in private companies received the least salaries, as 10% of the employees were working for $25,000-49,999 and the percentage of people receiving more than $100,000 was only 30%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify both visuals and provide an overview, noting that most graduates entered work and that high salaries were common in two sectors. However, several figures or interpretations are inaccurate: 13% continued studying, rather than the chart’s 8% in full-time postgraduate study plus 5% combining part-time work and study; and 20% were not simply working part-time, since 15% did so while 5% combined work with study. The overview also says 80% earned over $75,000, but the table shows 80% earning at least $75,000 in freelance and government roles, not necessarily more than that amount. The salary discussion omits freelance consultants and gives the government figures incorrectly. Covering all categories accurately and comparing the salary bands more fully would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph on graduate destinations and a final paragraph on salaries. This makes the information easy to follow, and phrases such as “Overall” and “Compared to others” help signal the direction of the discussion. The progression is generally coherent, though the salary paragraph covers only government and private employment, leaving freelance consultants unintegrated. Some linking is also mechanical or imprecise: “If we discuss about” does not form a natural transition, and “The employment rate among graduates was 12%” actually refers to unemployment. Use more precise references and organise the salary comparisons across all three employment types to make the cohesion more consistently effective.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “undergraduate degree,” “opted for,” “proportion,” and “received salaries,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are attempts at more formal reporting language, but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural: “employment rate” is used for the 12% who were unemployed, while “fate” is an unsuitable way to describe graduates whose destination is unknown. “If we discuss about” is also an awkward collocation. Spelling errors such as “Antrhropology,” “employement,” and “proporation” reduce accuracy, although they do not prevent understanding. Aim for precise chart vocabulary, such as “unemployment rate,” “destination was unknown,” and “earned,” and proofread spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a subordinate clause in “as the majority of the graduates were working” and a comparison introduced by “Compared to others.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical patterns need more control. For example, “If we discuss about” uses an incorrect verb pattern; write “When considering” or “Regarding.” In “After graduating from university, 13% of graduates continued their study,” the opening phrase is not clearly attached to the graduates, and “their study” would more naturally be plural in this context. The sentence “The employment rate among graduates was 12%” is grammatically formed but does not express the intended category. More accurate sentence framing and varied comparisons would improve control.
