IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows what Anthropology graduates from one university did after finishing their undergraduate degree course. The table shows the salaries of the anthropologists in work after five years.
Summarize the information by selecting and reporting the main features and make comparison where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The pie chart demonstrates the destinations chosen by Antrhropology graduates after finishing their undergraduate degree course from one particular university, while the table depicts the incomes of antrhropologists after five years.
Overall, it is evident that the majority of graduates opted for full-time work, while part-time work and postgrad study simultaneously made up the lowest proportion. In addition, individuals who earned more than $100,000 were mostly working in the government sector, whereas the lowest salary represented the lowest share ($25,000-49,999).
To begin with, more than half of the graduates preferred full-time work, at 52%. Part time work accounted for 15% and people who were unempoyed stood at 12%. Full-time postgrad study and not known data both recorded 8% of the total and part-time work and postgrad study simultaneously made up the lowest share, at 5%.
With regard to table, it illustrated that people who worked as freelance consultants and had salary between $25,000 and $49,999 constituted 5% of workers, while individuals who had $75,000-99,999 and more than $100,000 were at 40%. In terms of the government sector, although only 5% had $25,000-49,999 salary, half of them had more than $100,000. In contrast, in private companies, antrhropology graduates earned $25,000-49,999 and $50,000-74,999 accounted for 10% and 35% respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both the graduate destinations and the salary table, and your overview identifies the largest destination category and the smallest one accurately. Several figures are also reported correctly, including full-time work at 52%, unemployment at 12%, and the government-sector top salary band at 50%. This shows a clear grasp of the main information. However, the salary overview is less precise: saying the lowest salary band had the “lowest share” is not true across all employment types, since private companies recorded 10% in that band, and the table’s strongest comparisons are not fully drawn out. You also omit the private-company figures for the two highest bands. More complete comparisons across the salary bands would make the report more fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-part structure: introduction, overview, graduate destinations, and salary details. The progression from the pie chart to the table is easy to follow, and signposts such as “To begin with” and “In contrast” help guide the reader. The overview also gives the reader a useful sense of the main patterns before the details. Some linking is slightly mechanical, and the final paragraph becomes a sequence of figures rather than a fully balanced comparison. For example, the private-company sentence reports only the two lower salary bands, leaving the comparison incomplete. Grouping the salary data by notable contrasts—such as the high proportions in the top band for government and freelance work—would strengthen the flow and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of chart-reporting vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “constituted,” “depicts,” and “in contrast,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “simultaneously” and “with regard to.” However, some choices are awkward or imprecise for describing data: “preferred” suggests a personal choice, while “lowest salary represented the lowest share” is unclear and overgeneralised. “Salary” is also better expressed as a salary band or income category when referring to the table’s percentages. Spelling errors in “Antrhropology,” “antrhropologists,” and “unempoyed” detract from accuracy. Aim for precise, natural collocations and check spelling carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, and several sentences are well controlled, including “although only 5% had $25,000-49,999 salary, half of them had more than $100,000.” The response is generally easy to understand, with frequent accurate use of past-tense reporting verbs and comparison structures. Some grammatical patterns are less secure, however. In “With regard to table,” the article is missing, and “people who worked as freelance consultants and had salary between…” needs more accurate article and noun phrasing. The sentence beginning “In contrast, in private companies…” also has an unclear subject and verb relationship: graduates did not “account for” the salary percentages. Keep the sentence structures, but check articles and ensure each percentage is grammatically linked to the category it describes.
